IBM eServer 325 1u rackmount server for $219.99

anyone got one of these? How noisy are they? Was tempted and there are a bunch on sale on ebay too.

I bought a couple of these servers from a local source (Garland Computers in Garland, TX, a suburb of Dallas) for $175 each. Mine came with 1GB RAM, 20GB HDD, and 2x Opteron 242 (1.6GHz).

How loud are they? They have 8 tiny fans inside. They are REALLY loud at startup and annoyingly loud the rest of the time. I would not want to have this server running in the same room with me.

Overall I am very pleased with the power for the price. I got a good deal on some RAM on eBay, so both are now stocked with 3GB (6x512MB). I have considered buying the SCSI backplane (SCSI is on the motherboard, but if you want to hot-swap you have to buy the backplane) and a couple of SCSI drives, but haven't taken that plunge yet. I had no problem installing FreeBSD and will be taking them to the colo facility within the next couple of weeks.

BTW, Geeks is wrong, there are only 2 3.5" drive bays.

Had a voicemail from geeks.com but they just asked that I call them back about the order. I am not sure whether to call or not. I want my servers.

Online, the order still shows as "Processing"

They just wanted to verify my amex info since shipping was different than billing. Servers should be there to setup at the colo today. I can add ram and stuff later if needed.
