IBM Desktar...aka DeathStar? Any good?

I just got an IBM DeskStar from a friend. It was made in Thailand. 40 GB. 7200 RPM. Manufactured in Dec of '01. Was thinking of running my OS on it instead of partitioning my 160 GB Maxtor that's 7200 rpm and with 8mb cache. Im not sure how much the IBM has in cache. Should i bother using it? My friend never used it before. It's still sealed. My guess is that it would have been a grip of money when it was made...well maybe not a grip but not quite .50/GB nowadays.

Your Maxtor is the faster drive, so make a 10GB c: and put windows on it. If you really think you are going to fill up the ~160GB drive then keep the 40GB IBM, which has a 2MB cache, for a slave.

some people love em' , some hate em'. i wouldn't put anything on it i couldn't afford to lose.

Use it for a porn drive. But put all your best porn that you can't afford to lose on your maxtor.

Put like bukkake and stuff like that on the deskstar.

Despite the problems with the Deathstars, they were nice drives, pretty fast and quiet. I would install it and then update to the new firmware. Not to mention, not all of them failed.

On a serious note, I wouldn't deal with the Deathstar. I had 3 go bad on me and they were all made in Thailand.
