ive got an ibm deskstar 60gxp (60gb), and i think it may have just failed. it started beeping intermittently today, and now on post it does the same thing and wont be detected. any suggestions or ideas? theres data on this drive that i cant lose, so sending it in for a replacement isnt my best bet.

-edit-
i now get the idea that the drive heads have crashed.. what would be the symptoms/indications of this? it beeped, then made a squeaking noise, then another beep, etc. if the heads did crash, getting my data back would cost about $1800, by sending it off to a cleanroom. as it is, if the heads have crashed, i shouldnt be powering it on..
-edit

thanks, danny

run the IBM drive fitness test on it, if it turns up problems, I think your best bet would be to hire a professional data extractor to do the work for you.

have you tried it as a slave???
of course the obvious would be to get another drive make that one the primary and the ibm the secondary; and then try to see if you can access that drive as secondary...

mines just died yesterday too. ibm 60gxp 60gb. last month my 45gb 75gxp failed on me. I know that people say ibm drives are fast and whatnot but it doesn't justify the massive failures in their drives. i will NEVER buy another ibm drive again. Btw, did I mention that on my 60gb that failed, I had 45GB of home video recording that I was editing? So much for all that.
