I am upgrading my computer one part at a time. Now it is time to upgrade the hard drive. I want very high quality with good performance. Money is not a big deal, but I am not looking for anything rediculous like SCSI. I an planning on buying the IBM Deskstar 75GXP 45GB from onvia.com Is this the best one? Is anything new supposed to come out as far as hard drives go in the next 6 months or so?

As far as IDE drives go, yeah IBM are probably tops. Maxtors are good to(DM60).

You'll be happy with it.

I've had marvelous IBM drives in the past and hope to replace my 2 10GM Maxtors (in RIG 1) from the Maxtor DM Plus 40 series with a 30GB or 45GB IBM from the 75GXP series.

I have never dealt with onvia.com but I have dealt with Techstore.com 17 times now (just received order #16 and the TDK 12X10X32X CD-RW is due Tuesday) and LOVE them.

You might want to compare prices by checking in here.

Click on their green in-stock link during the hours the "in stock" server is running (they've now added Saturdays and Sundays) and you can get a TOTAL amount in stock and by clicking on the "detail" link within THAT window you can find out how many units are at EACH warehouse location. I live in MI, close to their Indiana warehouse and have gotten most of my orders within 3 days, 2 of them within 28 hours of ordering!!!!

Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 60 series drives are great. It's quiet enough, unless you have super quiet HSF and PS, you won't hear any noise from the drive.
Also, Maxtor is faster than IBM on reading/writing big chunk of files. So if you're planning to work with huge multimedia files, I think Maxtor is better for you.

MoneyDontMatter be careful what you say about SCSI...

this is from Radboy "SCSI is definitely not for everybody, but..."

So take a look at ur name... and your needs... SCSI can be faster, for sure, bit it also has a hole lot other benefits...

You might not need SCSI that is cool but SCSI is not rediculous!!!

It all depends...

I would go with either a Maxtor or Quantum...

But I don't think there is a huge difference in those dirves...

I know, I love SCSI and intend on building an all SCSI machine one day. That is when I am building my dream machine for myself when MoneyDontMatter. This is just an upgrade for my dad. He does not like spending money and a SCSI controller and HDD are just out of the price range. That is all I meant by rediculous. It's just way out of my price range, that's all. I'm sorry if I offended any of you SCSI lover out there, I didn't mean it. I love SCSI.

From a performance standpoint, you would be hard pressed to blindly tell the difference between the top 5 or 6 IDE contenders. Buy whatever you can find for cheapest. I'd be willing to wager the majority of people using the IBM drives are comparing them to their previous 2 year IDE drive that was dog slow, which leads them to believe they are oodles faster than anything out there without having used any other current drive.

Alright, I'm convinced. So, I'm going to order the Retail IBM Deskstar 75GXP 45GB from onvia.com I haven't installed a hard drive in a while. I am running Win2K. As far as I can remeber, all I do is put in the boot disk, run fdisk and partition, format, then install win2k. Is this all there is to it? I don't need to install any drivers or patches or software or anything like that do I? Any tips? Thanks you have been a great help.

Maxtors and IBMs @ 7200rpm's are the fastest, quietest, and best drives :). They're not too expensive either :D.

Are the IBM 60GXP drives out yet? They should be faster than the 75GXP's AFAIK since the platters are denser.

Sukhoi, imperceptively faster if anything unless IBM has some tricks up their sleeves. And the 60GXP's max. capacity will be 60 GB vs. 75 for the 75GXP series.

Can't go wrong with either Maxtor or IBM. I slightly preferred the Maxtor so got that one.

Head on over to comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.storage and see what people are reporting about this drive. They're fast and quiet, but they appear to have some reliability issues.
