I have two Deathstars that died due to the usual cause of death associated with Deathstars. Does anyone know if the "freezer" trick works on this type of problem. I'm going to toss both of them in the freezer tonight when I get home from work, but I'm just curious if anyone has gotten them to work again briefly after employing this trick?

Thanks, but that thread nor any referenced within that thread contain any such information about IBM Deathstars unless I missed it while browsing through them.

I intend to, I was hoping that someone else could confirm or deny it before I got home tonight. I have 2 drives I plan on freezing. I don't even remember what was on one of the drives!

As seen in this thread the freezer trick does work, though there is nothing to guarantee it will or won't in your particular case. Not to mention the many many many instances where it worked for people in the "200 ways" article linked to in the thread mentioned earlier.

I think it'd be much more efficient to hook up your dead drive to a rounded cable and put a hole in the ziploc baggie for the rounded cable to run out through. Then just use some packing tape to seal between the baggie and the rounded cable. If you have both the master and slave connectors in the baggie, they should be fine, no precipitation... and the one end that is out, well, cover it while it's in the freezer and condensation shouldn't be too severe once you remove (assuming you're not in the tropics).

Anyways, just a thought on how to set things up quickly.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I got completely sidetracked last night and forgot to put the drives in the freezer. I'll try to remind myself to do that this evening and let you guys know what happens. Hopefully I'll be able to recover a good portion of my MP3 collection that was lost, if not oh well, guess I'll start ripping CD's again sometime.

March 26, 2003 Update: I put both drives in the freezer last night inside tightly wrapped anti-static bags and then inside of some Zip-Lock bags that I removed as much air from as possible before sealing. That was about 8pm last night. As soon as I get home tonight I'll pull them out of the freezer and hook them up. I'll post the results of my attempt back here when I'm done.

March 26, 2003 6PM Update: I tried both drives after removing them from the freezer, even tried Ghosting one to try and get the raw data but both were failures as I suspected. I have gone ahead and filled out an RMA for the 1 drive and plan on returning it in the next day or two for replacement. The other drive is no longer under warranty, it will now be disassebled and turned into a coaster or work of art.

Thanks Thorin. I've packed up the one drive that was still under warranty and its going out today. Hopefully I'll get a new Hitachi manufactured drive instead of another used servicable part like I got the last couple of times.
