dirtboy: I read about the salaries from the article a couple months back. The Seattle Times article seems to just be an update.

Here's an article that does state the salaries, though.

strike article

A full-time longshoreman earned $107,000 last year and a full-time foreman averaged $167,000, according to maritime association records.

Brutal, isn't it? I know someone who works for IGS in Armonk, and he told me that 10% of their support staff got let go in the last round of layoffs. He's also ticked off because he's no longer able to get job training or tuition reembursement, due to a big cut in the education budget.

Ok I think I'm going to forget the computer industry as a viable trade. It has long since lost its appeal and keeps getting worse. Consider yourself EXTREMELY lucky (damn near blessed) to have a successful IT career.

It's been like that for a long while. Online training before classroom training. Tuition reimbursement I wasn't aware of. They cut travel out since more than 1.5 years ago. Local travel only. This economy only has one way to go from here. And it better do so real soon.

Yes I can, but dock work in the port of Los Angeles is never that cold!

Yeah some people are losing their jobs...but remember the fuzzy accounting makes it look worse than it really is...
Hmmm. They've already gone through forced retirement, bridged (to contract), and re-orgs. IBM is walking through the hallways looking for unhappy employees and listening to watercooler politics. This isn't natural attrition.

I've been in IT for eight years and making decent wages. I have considered myself lucky for the past two years. It's all about timing. My current job ends this Friday. I had another company ask if I could leave earlier than the available date they were given. When I said no, that was the end of the conversation. Two years ago, a company would have waited 2-3 weeks for you to be available. Now they can find a hundred other people with the same skills. Thankfully for me I work for a company that pays even when I am not billing. Of course this could change anyday now.

Ok, turns out this isn't a new set of lay-offs. These are the same lay-offs that were expected after the 2Q results. That figure was 3% or approximately 9500 jobs, IIRC. So, now this is the figure that has been bloated to 15k.

IBM's Second-Quarter Layoffs Detailed

From above link,

According to the company's 10-Q report, 14,213 of the workers were in the company's Global Services business. Most left the company by the end of June. The rest will go by the end of next month. Another 1,400 workers also were laid off, with the majority of that group leaving by the end of August. All those who were laid off were notified by June 30, according to the filing.
