Can I used my IBM Aptiva E 545 case and install a new motherboard, cpu, etc? Or do I have to buy a new case in order to build a computer? I just want the the basics.....Pentium 4, 800 FSB.....Please help. Thanks in advance

No.

IBM uses proprietary motherboard configuration in their desktops.

You will not find a Motherboard or Power Supply that will fit correctly (without modification).

While we're at it, does anyone have any idea if I can use a Sony (model unknown, has Celeron 600 or so) case to rebuild?

thanks

Even if the case were industry standard, which I highly doubt, most P4 motherboards have an additional 4pin 12volt power connector which the power supply in that IBM case doesn't have. There may be adapters out there to make it happen, but new computer cases with P4 capable power supplies are very inexpensive; even local vendors are likely to have such cases(with power supply) in the $35 to $50 range.
