IBM 75GXP just died - ARGH

My IBM 75GXP made scratching noises when Windows 2000 was starting up, and it said my Administrator profile was lost blah blah...

everytime it restarted (hot re-start), it would loose my settings!

Then I rebooted (ala switching the power supply) and CHKDSK ran a scan, found 67MB in lost sectors.

Is this the infamous 75GXP death???

I bought it exactly one year ago from Comp-U-Plus, can I get it RMA'd from them or from IBM?

If I do that, will I get a new 60GXP or 120GXP? And if so, do the 120GXPs or 60GXPs die also?

I think I might just buy a Maxtor D740X - those things are bulletproof!

Check with comp-u-plus, it's possible they'll still take it back, but not likely. IBM should take it back, I'm not sure what they'll give you in return. Whatever you get, sell it and buy a western digital drive. Maxtor is a good choice too, but there's talk they're dropping the 3 yr warranty to 1 yr on all their drives

Western Digital is better than Maxtor IDEs in terms of durability/reliability?

The Maxtor D740X still seems to have a 3 year warranty...

anyone know what IBM is sending out now when you RMA a 75GXP?

I remember back in the day they sometimes gave out new 60GXPs.

My friend has a 120GXP and he said its making squeely noises too. ugh

I was playing America's Army: Ops and it just reset the entire computer! I always thought it was RAM/CPU issues but I'm seriously thinking its the HD.

IBM sucks...

This is why I would never a) buy an IBM drive or b) reccomend an IBM drive to anyone else.

:disgust:

Any ideas as to what I should do now?

I'm sending the drive back to IBM, its going to cost me $12 to ship it.

Chances are they'll send me either an 80GB 120GXP or a 60GB 60GXP, most likely the 80GB 120GXP...
which is also a POS.

I want to buy a new drive but cost is a concern.

I'm not sure which to get:
Maxtor D740X 40,60, or 80
Segate Baracudda ATAV
or a Western Digital "Special Edition"
Price is a concern tho

I read that FAQ already..

I asked for advice as to what I should do now besides sending it back!!!

What IDE hard drive should I get?

IBM is in California, shipping it 18th class isn't going to help much! I'll have to ship it priority, in the authorized HDD packaging, with delivery confirmation.

It all adds up :(

My 30GB IBM 75GXP died back around late July. I mailed it in in early August. I got my new one back (another 30GB GXP75) yesterday.

Oh man they replaced it with another 75GXP?

I'm going to just toss it back at them if its another 75GB 75GXP.
This is so fuc*ing stupid.

Was it the same 75GXP you sent in or was it a different one?

This one is pretty scratched on top and I usually take as best care as I can of my stuff. I'm nearly certain it's not the same one that I sent in unless they really took poor care of the one that I sent in.

Still, one GXP75 looks just like another GXP75 to me, so I can't be sure.

I was using it as my backup to my primary drive (WD1000BB which was only ~30GB full). When it died, I replaced it with a $110 WD800JB. Now I'm that I have it back from IBM not so sure what I'm going to do with this GXP75. Definitely nothing important. :)

FWIW, here's my thread from early August on the subject.

I figured they'd fix the problem with the 60GXP or even the 120 GXP!!!

Although I've heard good things about the 120 GXP - I'd be happy if they sent me a 80GB 120GXP. Another 75GB GXP results in me throwing the HD off of a second story building 15 times then sending it back.

Isn't someone persuing a class action suit regarding these 75GXP drives...If
so, what is the status of that suit.

I have 3-4 of these 75GXP drives sitting around, new in box, and sure wish I could
get something for them. I am definitely not going to install them in any computer I
have to deal with!

The webpage (found through Google) is here.

No doubt this will end up like several of the other amazing class action lawsuits that I have been part of. The US Robotics lawsuit's settlement was such an insult that I wrote to the judge. (they gave a coupon $15 off coupon towards the purchase of a future US Robotics modem valued over $100. Not that I thought that they had much of a case, but still that settlement was utterly useless in light of the fact that the attorneys for the "class" got somewhere around $1.1 million US dollars.) The Iomega "click of death" lawsuit settlement was almost as bad.

I just learned of the nickname the 75GXPs and 60GXPs earned and rightfully so: "Deathstars"

lol

No, there is nothing wrong with the Travelstar series of hard drives. Only the Deskstar 75GXP's have a reputation of reliabliity problems.

One of the connectors on my 30GB 75GXP broke off when moving it to another system, honestly, it didn't take much to break it. The thing was always pretty flimsy. I got an RMA, but decided to take matters into my own hands, and pressed a soldering gun against the broken connection. Seems to have fixed it. Looking at how these connectors are attached to the circit board, I'm surprised it didn't brake much earlier. But given what I've been hearing since almost the day I bought it, there's no assurance I won't get something worse if I send it back.

:(

IBM Reports my drive has been received but no word on when they'll ship out a replacement and what model it will be.

Everytime I get pissed off because i have to borrow my friend's computer, printer, and scanner - I mail off an angry email to IBM.
