Kinda lame article, as it seems to be pure speculation. See here. (Hopefully not already posted, but didn't come up in search.)
I do agree that these things run warm though, and I wouldn't be surprised if it were a heat issue. It'd be nice if we had numbers though, and I wonder how many of the failures were in overclocked systems too.
Anyways, out of Fujitsu, Quantum, Seagate, IBM, WD, and Maxtor, so far the only two companies with no failures for me are IBM strangely enough. (I right now have 3 IBMs: 2 75GXPs and 1 34GXP.)
