IBM 75GXP failure article.

Kinda lame article, as it seems to be pure speculation. See here. (Hopefully not already posted, but didn't come up in search.)

I do agree that these things run warm though, and I wouldn't be surprised if it were a heat issue. It'd be nice if we had numbers though, and I wonder how many of the failures were in overclocked systems too.

Anyways, out of Fujitsu, Quantum, Seagate, IBM, WD, and Maxtor, so far the only two companies with no failures for me are IBM strangely enough. (I right now have 3 IBMs: 2 75GXPs and 1 34GXP.)

Seems more like speculation. Heat is a non issue for IBM drives as they use Glass platters, which are much less prone to expansion than ceramic ones.

did u read the article? in the article they "speculate" that it is the controller chip overheating, how does that in any way relate to glass platters??

at least read it before you critique it.

I use an IBM 60GXP 40GB as my primary drive, no special cooling for the drive. It is mounted below my floppy drive, and I have not had any problems so far...though I have had windows XP give me a "system boot error" blue screen at startup periodically...I've never lost an data, yet.

This article doesn't seem to represent a significant amount of the drives sold.
