Ok I have this 40 gig IBM Deskstar, yes the one that is in a lawsuit right now. It worked fine for the past yr but it suddenly made a medium pitched electrical sound. IBM gave me some software to run and the results were that it was in working condition with no problems.

I'm thinking of bitching to IBM for another drive.

Any suggestions to the sound?

MSI Pro2a Mobo
T-bird 1 Ghz
Antec 1030

I've put the HD next to my ear when I boot it up and am sure it is coming from the HD. I even booted with the HD unplugged, no sound. Hence something is up with the HD.

If you don't have a code to give back or a dead drive then I doubt they are going to replace it.

Call them up and b*tch.

I had a 75gxp making noises, drive fitness tool said it was OK. I saw the reports on the 75gxp and called back demanding a replacement of a different drive.

They sent me a 60gb 60gxp to replace my 45gb 75gxp.

I have the 60gxp in a raid 1 config with another 60gxp, so I'm not worried about one failing.....

Anyhow, call and be polite, but persistent.
