IBM 60GXP click-o-death

Well it finally happened. My 60GXP gave up the ghost. It would constantly click, kind of like the heads resetting or something. After a long weekend of reloading windows onto a new Maxtor drive. I am finally back up. The good news is that I stole my kids motherboard (Asus A7N8X Deluxe). I bought it for me, but I really did not want to reinstall windows at the time. Now the kids have the old Epox 8KHA+.
The clicking noise happened once before, but I crossed my fingers that it was not a sign of things to come, I guess I was wrong. Now the question, to RMA or not to RMA.
While I was at it I upgraded my CPU from 1600+ to 2400+. Don't know why, but it runs about 4C cooler. Maybe I just had too much dust of the heatsink.

RMA it...IBM will send you the new drive first and you send old one in their box. simple. Also my 60gxp has been running for over 3 years almost 365 24/7

did you ever flash the firmware on yours? its supposed to dramatically decrease the chance of hdd failure (just wondering since you mentioned its been working 24/7 for years)

Yeah, I tried to flash it, but I had the version that was not flashable (Don't remember the details).

If its still under warranty, RMA it for sure. It'll cost you shipping and even if you don't need it, you could at least cover your replacement costs here on FS/FT. As for the CPU running cooler, that's pretty normal if your 1600+ was a Palomino. The 2400+ is a T-bred B and runs cooler than the Palomino....time to overclock that thing (especially since you have a great OC'ing board now 😉).

Heh, I just got my replacement drive today, my 46gb 60gxp died a few months ago and I didnt feel like messing with it/forgot about it. I found it again two weeks ago and checked the warranty online, I had 10 days left!

The drive I got back is an 82.3gb 180gxp 😀
