I have this old laptop that I only want to use to access the internet via WIFI from the patio to my PC's router. Looking at the system requirements for Ubuntu, which I just got, it requires 256MBs of ram, but I only have 96MBs, and I don't think that I can add any more. Is there a distro that would work on this machine?

The logo on it says that it is for W98 and NT only, but my W98 disk is bad, and I lost the key for NT. I did have XP installed on it, but it ran like molasses.
 
Yeah, Ubuntu was slightly sluggish even with 192 megs of ram. Try Xubuntu. DamnSmallLinux would always work and Puppy Linux, but I'd recommend something that looks better. Depending on your processor, Arch Linux might be a good option. Zenwalk and Vector are two others that come to mind.

Or if you want to customize which window manager you want to use, there's always Debian.
 
I tried running Debian Live CD on it, and something went very haywire, I don't know if it would install or not. I'll probably try one of the others. I gather from what you said, that those other options don't have any customization options...huh?

I'm not really sure, but since you mentioned choosing the Window Manager as a customization option, I just started thinking about alot of other vague things. I suppose that what you meant, is that there is not a choice of desktops...i.e. KDE, Gnome, etc.
 
Oh right. Well I know Arch Linux has a huge repository of optimized binaries so it'd be much easier to get the window manager you want and stuff. I believe you can use Debian's repositories with DSL since its debian based, but I don't believe its recommended and I wouldn't recommend it either. Xubuntu is just Ubuntu with a different desktop environment. You have the same access to Ubuntu's repositories so you can switch desktop environments, windows managers, etc easily. Don't know much about how repositories are set up with Vector and Zenwalk.

In the end you could always compile and install any window manager with any distribution. Its just tons easier in some distributions than in others. Best scenario is getting away with running Xubuntu (actually I just forgot about Fluxbuntu, you can get away with that too). Next best is getting away with Arch. This is from the distros I've listed though.
