Not bad~ I miss those buy.com coupons. We use to be able to get these for around 110~120$ with those coupons. :(

Don't forget, CompUSA sells the Western Digital ATA-100, 7,200 RPM, 30 GB *retail* drive for $119.99 - which is their 'regular' price. While I know it's not an IBM drive, it is a good deal.

Make sure you check on the warranty policy. IBM is notorious for not honoring warranties on OEM drives.

I wouldnt consider this a hot deal at all.. maybe if it were a 40 gig drive but in no way is this a hot deal.. you can get a ibm deskstar 45 gig 7200 rpm ata/100 drive for like 25 more bux which includes shipping and is a lot better. And you could say that every maker of hard drives is notorious for havin bad service or not honoring stuff. As long as you keep your invoices and what not it doesnt matter! Its all in the eye of the beholder really because people say the same thing about WD drives and when I had a problem with 2 different drives they were like, "Oh just send it in let me give you an RMA and we will fix it right away for you". b]Its all in the eye of the beholder![/b]

well, the part about every had driver mfg is not true. my brother unplugged his WD hard drive with it turned on (i know, moron) and WD still took it back right away. the hard drive was OEM too and the OEM mfg was out of business.

Doesn't western digital license IBM's product? I thought I read somewhere where the current line of 7200rpm drives are basically the same with respect to IBM and Western Digital. Can anyone comment on this?

Update

Found the comment in an AnandTech article from March 2000. Don't know if it applies to this family of drives but they were 7200rpm models.

The Western Digital Expert 25.7, WD273BA, is identical to the IBM Deskstar 34 GXP. Besides a few different labels on the drives, you would have a hard time telling them apart if you mixed them up. The similarities don?t end at external looks either, as both drives performed so close in the benchmarks that they had virtually identical results. This really comes as no surprise, being that WD has been licensing IBM?s drive technology for the past few years. Just judging between the similarity in appearance, physical specifications, and performance, we would say WD basically is using the IBM design and just adding their logo.

34GXP is yesterday's technology. No idea if that applies to the current crop of hard drives.

I wouldnt get an OEM IBM drive. I heard they dont honor oem drives if they break. And the 75GXP's seem to break a lot.

I bought a couple of the 30 gig 75GXPs OEM from buy.com and now I am having second thoughts. When I received them they had no warranty cards so I sent buy.com an e-mail asking how to register the warranty. They never responded. Guess I will make sure the receipt is kept in a safe place. Are there any articles about the reliability of these drives or any other for that matter?

hmmm, I would say that a lot of people trust IBM much more than WD, and I've heard quite a few people say that IBM will cover OEM drives...
