I've enough to get a good 7200RPM HD and is IBM 15GB Deskstar 75GXP - ATA 33-100 - 7200RPM - 8.5ms - 2MB (DTLA307015) a good one?

Did you have trouble setting the ATA-66 with this HD?

Thanks in advanced. ;)

Nice to hear that, LXi. :)

Does it come with a software like OnTrack to make sure it fully use all 15GB ??

nEoTeChMaN: About OnTrack, Im not sure about it, cause I dont have this drive. But I think it will come with some software that allows you to use all 15gigs.

I saw this:
"IBM's Deskstar 75GXP should be out soon, as well as a number of other ATA 100 models, that promise to take the crown away from Maxtor. We'll have to wait and see if that actually happens. For now the 40 Plus is king. Further information is available in our Maxtor DiamondMax 40 Plus Review."

The 75GXPs are great, I've a 30GB. rickn's benchs are very close to mine. There's some debate over whether this drive or the Quantum LM is the King. It's too close to call.

As for ATA/100, yeah the drive is compatible with it but so are all the previous generation of drives. From all I've seen the 75GXP's can't make use of ATA/100s extra bandwidth to improve performance so don't fret about that...but be sure to get ATA/66 as it can make use of that bump.

In my opinion, you wont go wrong with either of the following three drives: IBM 75GXP, Quantum Fireball LM, and Maxtor DiamondMax Plus40.

You just wont go wrong with them, they're all quiet, they're all quality hard drives, and they're all fast performers(well Maxtor being the slowest of the three). They're all good.

LXi's got it right.

Quantum, IBM or Maxtor. I myself went with Quantum. But I think an IBM or a Maxtor would be just as good.

If the IBM supports ATA100 and the others don't, go for it. Also, don't worry about being able to use all 15GB, your BIOS will support it (probably supports past 60-80GB or so.. probably more).

PS: I had no trouble using all 20GB of my Quantum LM on my VA-503+ without software - but on my P83 Dell I had to use Ontrack Disk Manager - then it worked fine.

How much you wanna bet you will not be saying that in a month from your purchase? :)

When I bought my 20GB I was like "DAMN this thign is gonna be HUGE"

Now, I'm worrying about not filling it up too fast :)

Hehe :D

Well, I have a 10GB Fujitsu HD also and I've only used maybe 4-6GB out of 10GB for a year now. :)

I have a SCSI-2 8x CD Burner which take care of all the filling. ;)

The Quantum Fireball Plus LM and the Deskstar 75GXP both have their strong points, it is really too close to call when it comes to performance.
The one sure thing I can say that would differentiate the two would be the incredibly high reliability of the IBM drives. I am pretty sure you would have problems finding someone that had an IBM drive die on them (that was actually IBMs own fault). I am not saying that Quantums are not reliable, just that IBMs are way above par when it comes to reliablity.

I just got it, it beats my old Quantum EX hands down. One hell of a drive, and with IBM name behind it, its a best buy....

I've got a Quantum Fireball Plus LM 20.6 GB. I'm very satisfied but I would say it's about twice as loud as my Fireball CR was. I hear every access. ;)

Blazingly fast though. And it senses automatically if your mobo supports ATA66 or only 33 (as my P3B-F does). No need to run software for the change.

Just installed that very drive about 3 weeks ago- definitely smokes :)
I'm using the IBM as the main, and the Maxtor as a back-up.

TomY: The Quantums are just as reliable. Experience computer technicians will tell you the same. They're by far some of the most reliable hard drives in the market. I would say Quantum's quality is on par with IBM's, and yet they usually cost a lot less than IBM. Dont let IBM's price tag fool you to think they're superior to others.

This drive is nice. Quite, fast and light. I bought the 30.7 GB version a month ago. I'm really happy with it. Oh yeah and the ATA-100 actually works faster than ATA-33 (I tried it on Abit SE6). It takes less time to transfer files or to format the drive. :)

dennil that's 20.5 gigs not 20.6 gigs, I have the same drive, and yes, it kicks major ass :)

Quantum's are the most reliable, I'd say even more reliable than IBM. Noise isn't a factor for me, so Quantum is a clear winner.

Charles : You're suprised that ata100 is faster than ata33? man, I was amazed at the difference that ata33 made from regular ata-2!
