I've recently upgraded my Dell Latitude D620 with 2x2GB of RAM (4GB total) and was choked to see that my laptop would not recognize it all, even with a 64-bit OS. It would only see 3326MB for me, even in the BIOS.
From what I've read so far, it's a hardware limitation with the i945 chipset. Apparently it doesn't support memory remapping, similar to using a 32-bit OS on a 4GB machine with capable hardware. Dell says the laptop supports 4GB RAM, but I can't find any documentation of this limitation. Intel also states that the i945 chipset supports up to 4GB as well. Yes, the system does recognizes it as installed but it's useless to me if it's not usable.
Just to make this clear, this is not an OS limitation (in this case). Even only reports 3326MB of RAM available for use.
With memory prices falling like crazy and 4GB on laptops being very affordable, I just thought I'd give you guys all a heads up.
