i9 9900K vs 3700x

Hello what do you think is a better choice for gaming and photo editing. Brand new Ryzen 3700x and B45O motherboard or I can buy from a friend brand new I9 99OOK and ROG MAXIMUS X APEX (also new but without warranty). i9 9900K combo would be 200 USD more than 3700x thank you

Photoediting ( Photoshop and Lightroom ) love clockspeed. For gaming, the 9900k still eeks out most wins... albeit by very small margins.

That $200 could go towards other better components if 97% as fast is good enough for you.

If you can afford it, go with the i9 9900k or R9 3900x for even more performance and future proofing. The i9 9900k can overclock to 5GHz, meaning your apps and games will run faster compared to the 3700x.

What video card will you be running? The thing people forget is most of the reviewers are running rtx 2080Ti cards. Some reviews do the RTX 2080 which shows a smaller difference to the point really paying ~$200 more for gaming performance doesnt make sense.

So if you want to save some money get the 3700x, you will be happy with it. It will do all you need it to do well, especially if you don't have a top of the line graphics card to see the difference.

If you happen to run a rtx 2080Ti , then go with 9900k if gaming is your biggest importance. If you plan to do video editing or other content creation, streaming, pretty much anything else the 3900x is a better buy at the price point.

Also point out to overclock to 5ghz you need water cooling or a top of the line air cooler. So that is an added cost.

For you I would take that 200 and perhaps get a m2 NVME ssd and more RAM. That would make your whole experience a lot better.

For about the same price as the 9900K you can get a 3900X, and that CPU is only going to look better and better against the 9900K with time. Now, if you can get your friend to drop the price another $100, then that 9900K starts to look more tempting... especially with such a nice motherboard.

He does have a good point on price. If you can shave off some cost there then it be worth it. Though you wont be able to upgrade the cpu on the mb where as on amd you prob have one more generation you can upgrade on. I don't see them going to a new socket until DDR5 is out long enough. ( that my own thoughts on it )

Actually that's a good point, I'm also curious how well the VRMs on cheaper B350/B450 mobos will handle a 3900X in the long run even if they are 'BIOS compatible'. I remember there were issues with B360 and 9900K where the VRM would overheat and the 9900K was basically limited to ~4GHz or whatever.

To the OP, the 3700X is definitely the better value, and trades blows with the 9900K in overall performance. The 9900K might edge it by a few % but definitely not worth the $200 premium IMO. However, if you must have 'the best' gaming CPU and do your photo editing with Photoshop (which relies heavily on clockspeed) then an overclocked 9900K is probably the fastest option out there.
