i7 Gaming System - Bang For Buck & Headroom

I sold my old rig as I left the country for a few months for work so I'm starting over from total scratch. I'm looking to make a solid bang-for-the-buck system, with good upgradeability, and the least amount of major bottlenecks. I've been researching tons of Aantech and Toms Hardware articles and threads, as well as newegg customer revies and sample builds I've pieced togeather.

Compatibility is a big issue, and I'm sort of heart set on an i7 over AMD from all the great things I've heard about it. A few concerns *I* have are:

-Price: I was aiming for the $1600ish range, and I've pushed it up to $2200
-Case: Do I need to go with a full tower to fit the 4870 and that giant CPU fan? Would a solid mid-tower work? I was sort of at a loss there and this was a build that I had seen to be already proven and working. An Antec 300 would be to small and a 900 I wasn't sure about (mid-tower).
-Hard Drive: I was looking at a 150 GB Velociraptor 10k RPM, but I found a combo deal for the i7 and an Intel 80GB SSD that got the SSD price within about $50 of the Raptor...I figured what the hell?
-Monitor: A bit pricey for a 22" but a friend recommended it
-Video Card: This is the biggest question (as it usually always is). Should I go duel 512 MB 4870's? Should I go nVidia? Crossfire/SLI or single card? etc.
-Mobo: This is what's compatabile with all the parts, I have no preference in this regard...

Thanks for any assistance offered!

Biggest problem I see here is that you are getting WAAAAAY too much video card for your resolution. Spending $$$ on a multi gpu card for only 1680 x 1050 is a big waste. Either go with a bigger monitor to take advantage of you going with such a high end card or step down to a lesser video card.

Also if you're looking for best bang for the buck, an i7, Intel SSD, 4870x2, don't provide it. They are great performing parts but there are much better choices for bang for the buck. Either you want top performing parts or bang for the buck. You can't have both.

Updated with a better bang/buck scenario:

ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail ($289)
Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor ($289)

COOLER MASTER RC-690-KKN1-GP Black SECC/ ABS ATX Mid Tower Computer Case ($80)
Vigor Monsoon III LT Dual 120mm Fan CPU Cooler ($60)
OCZ Platinum 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Triple Channel ($110)
Western Digital VelociRaptor WD1500HLFS 150GB 10000 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive ($180)
SAPPHIRE 100270SR Radeon HD 4850 X2 2GB 512-bit (256-bit x 2) GDDR3 ($290)
ASUS VW246H Black 24" 2ms(GTG) HDMI Widescreen LCD Monitor ($270)

Thoughts?

q9550 or phenom 2 anyone
phenom has many fancy technos like with nehlem
some uncore blah blah blah
i suggest u step upto to a new display like
a 24" 1920 x 1080 full hd 😛

i recommend u keep the 4870x2 even though its a overkill but it will be great in the furture
i suggest u wait till the ati price cute (if it hasnt yet happened)
