yes, all stock settings on an Asus P6T. The chip is concave. None of the three heatsinks even got close to the center with contact.

It happens sometimes. If you get a chip that is exceptionally nonflat, you should lap it or return it.

If he's brave enough, he could just remove the IHS and put another IHS from other CPU, I did that to my old system which had a Pentium M which comes with no IHS, and I used a old Williamette IHS and the temperatures dropped considerably.

check your TIM application. It's purpose is to fill the gap between the IHS and heatsink.

Don't lap it, just RMA it. If you want to lap a properly functioning chip, thats your business. But lapping an obviously defective chip to try and "fix" it, will in all likelihood do nothing but void your warranty and is a bad idea.

AMD denied me when trying to exchange a 939 chip because they do not consider IHS flatness to be a defect.

I'm waiting to hear from Intel at this point. If no go then lapping I guess. I'll try something besides AS5 first; something thicker to fill the gap. Should've left that thick stuff from Intel on the stock HS.

if u cant rma it, lap it.

But u can check for a warped ihs with a razor.

Put the sharp edge ontop of your IHS and see if any light bleeds though the gap if any.

If you have a large gap, it means your ihs is warped, if no gap, it means u have bigger problems then a warped IHS.

IC Diamond 7 Carat would be better for gap filling than AS ...

Shin Etsu MicroSI can fill the gap.

he should check his tim application and contact patch first. That will tell him how well his mount is.

I use that thermal paste and worked better for me than AS

A lot of stuff works better than AS

There are reviews that show AS5 performing better than the Liquid Pro in that review. There is far, far too much widespread reviewer error to really be able to take away any kind of solid opinion on thermal pastes.

UPDATE
Going to try another motherboard now. With the chip OUT of the socked it looks good (razor blade test), makes good contact. I believe the load plate is either bent or defective.
....more later
thanks all

edit: just an FYI; the motherboard was an 'openbox' item from Newegg. They are handling it well - return shipping label and all

How it is applied can also affect performance. HardOCP had a roundup recently which showed differences from application methods.

People just think AS is the best because everyone else thinks it is the best. It is pretty darn good but so are a number of other compounds. Personally I don't use it because it doesn't clean up as easy.

then you have other bigger problems. Like bad mount, or maybe your putting on too much paste. Or your internal sensors are messed up.

Guys stop fighting on filler TIM. His problem isnt a warped IHS.
