i7 980X overclocking help?

Hi,

I'm looking to get more juice out of my CPU and while I know pretty much what all the pretty (and dangerous!) knobs in my BIOS do, I'm not sure what temps are safe for this chip.

Specifically, I'm looking at Prime95 Small-FFT temps. What's the max that I can safely sustain?

Thanks!

Tj max is 100C so anything under 90C should be perfectly safe with modest overvolting provided you tested with IntelBurnTest. It gives much higher temperatures than Prime.

Okay Intel 980X CPU and Asus Rampage 111 X58 motherboard, new 240gbs SATA111 SSD, is there anyway to get the projected sustained speeds from the SSD that they claim with this hardware? ( Sorry to hijack the thread.)

I know what the TJunction value is, but I'm not sure if that's actually a safe temp...

With Bloomfield (not gulftown) you were fine if you were ~80C or less. These chips do run HOT, but how high is your personal choice. With max stress on the CPU, plus maximum other heat (HDDs, GPU, etc) I would say keep it in the low 80's or cooler, preferably in 70's if you can.

That should net you a pretty solid OC over what you have now with 4.0ghz. I would think somewhere along the lines of 4.2-4.4 should be possible with very good cooling.

What cooling are using, BTW?

What type of cooling ? What Vcore ?

I had a 980X at 4.2g - 1.28vcore - CoolerMaster 212+ and load temps were mid 60's max @ 100% load..

Safe, is whatever works, if you are not hitting it with too much Vcore - Less than 1.35 ..

Meanwhile, if posters don't have any useful information to offer, you might consider finding a thread where you can actually help someone, which is how you would probably like to be treated ..

He got a really good deal on it.

I would do (did) 4.2GHz @ 1.375V with Load Line Calibration enabled. Try 200MHz x 21.

All right, will do! Thank you!

I'm cooling with a Corsair H60, though, which is probably inferior to the cooling you had with this thing. What temps did you get with the above settings?

At 4.14GHz with 1.312 Vcore with Prime95 small-FFT, one of the cores goes above 80C...

It would spike to upper 80s with AVX Linpack. You won't see near that with normal use though. Even folding at home with all cores/threads stays below 80s.
