I have a friend that needs a new system for Video Encode/Decode purpose.

Lets say Money is not an issue;

OS: Vista 64bit
RAM: 6GB (DDR2 or DDR3)
MB: Asus Maximus for Quad, and Intel x58so for i7

No need a graphic performance since the encoding/decoding is the main purpose, we need some heavy CPU usage.

I'd appreciate your thought on mainly these two CPUs
i7 940 vs qx9650,

OR any other comments are also welcome.

Cheers

Why not just check out AT's (and other sites) CPU reviews?

Preview: i7 spanks everything else in video stuff.

I should have mentioned earlier

I did check the reviews and we are leaning towards to i7 for sure,
It'll be nice to get some feedback from the people who uses or had the same dilemma.

The I7 950 is going to be released in the next few days. I would wait until it is released (I am btw) because:
It replaces the 940.
Costs about the same as the 940 (from what I've seen on the 'Net in the UK).
Is D0 stepping.
You get a slightly higher multiplier and an extra 133MHz for free.
Some sources say the release date is 21/4/09, 22/4/09 or 28/4/09. Either way it is pretty soon.

Edit: Welcome to the Forum.

I have a QX9650 that runs at 4GHz and a i7 940 at 3.8. The i7 is definitely faster for encoding videos. The first run I did was very noticeable and I did not even bother picking up a stopwatch to time it.

Money is no object:
eVGA Classified
I7 975 D0
3x2gb DDR3 1600mhz minimum speed.
Ultra 1600W PSU or Antec Quattro 1kw, or something in excess of 1kw. The Classified is one picky board with PSU's. (your PSU should cost more then 250 dollars in this config.)

Okey u made a mistake in saying money is no object.
i7 920 D0
Personally i like the ASUS P6T-Dlx, eVGA X58 vanilla, gigabyte x58 UD5 series and up.
3x2gb DDR3 1600mhz min speed.
You still need a quality PSU, PCnC 750 Silencer is good, Corsair HX1000, you should be spending around 100-200 dollars on your psu.

I am running the top config and a upgrade variation of the bottom config as well.
