So, would a i7 920 or FX 6300 be better? Passmark rates the 6300 higher, that's a synthetic benchmark. AM3+ by the looks of it is going to die by 2014 so it seems like a bad socket to move to. Which one has a higher IPC?

please clarify, are you planing on "upgrading" from 1366 to AM3+? or considering buying used 1366?
anyway, stock (2.66 vs 3.5GHz) vs stock the 920 and the 6300 are not that different in most cases http://anandtech.com/bench/product/47?vs=699, so it's clear that the i7 is faster per clock... OC max is probably 500-700MHz higher on the 6300, so the 920 is the fastest once you OC both
but 1366 is even more outdated, with no native sata III for example...
go with the cheapest option I guess.
Okay, thanks. I have a Cross hair V Formula I got very cheap ($110) and am thinking about selling it. I had it all ready, FX 6300, AMD edition case etc. But I broke the CPU and don't like the case very much so right now, I don't know what to do. I will probably go LGA 1155 tbh, or stay with AM3+ if I can't manage to sell my case on CGL.
