i7 920 D0

Are there any words on if this OCs better than the C0? IIRC, Aigo didn't say the new stepping was any better, but I could be wrong...
 
ETA right now is 4/1. It's been pushed back a bit... getting this in isn't quite so easy as running down to the corner store and picking them up 😉

For those that don't check the front page, Gary Key posted a D0 Preview at AT using retail samples from Tank Guys. Very promising results so far (copy and pasted):

so what's the big deal on this rev? how much better does it oc? any1 who has it should report back with some results. hate to salivating over nothingness. although that is fun.
 
I don't know why everyone is so obsessed with the new stepping. If you're running good memory and have adequate cooling the C0 is FINE and produces.

mmm... maybe because with better memory, and better cooling, you get a better chance at 4+?

Ok, this is my doubt. I have a P6T Deluxe with a 920 runing at 3.8Ghz @ 1.275vcore with Dominators C8 1600Mhz sticks ( 3x2). Can't get lower voltages and for higher clocks i need much more power. I'm runing a wc loop so i keep idle at low 30's and load at high 50's

I have the possibility to change my setup to a new D0 stepping and a new motherboard ... or the Gigabyte Extreme or the Asus P6T Dlx v2 or the Rampage II.

So, is it worth upgrading for the D0 or i won't get much different results?

Firstly let me state my personal opinion that if your system it is not at least 20 passes LinX stable then it is not stable, so I am curious what you used for stability testing?

If it is really stable at that vcore with HT on then I think you have a golden chip, D0 will most likely not benefit you much. I need a lot more voltage than you to reach 3.8Ghz (1.375v) with HT on. You must be running into some other wall if increasing cpu vcore is not helping much, have you tried increasing other voltages, especially QPI voltage/VTT, maybe running at the memory at a lower multiplier because the uncore has reached its clock limit?

I'm running the chip @ 19x200 BCLK, 1.275vcore, 1.3 qpiv, 1.60v mems. All the remaining is on auto. Well, i tested it with OCCT.
I see lots of people running the same speed at lower voltages with lower temps. So that's why i'm asking this

But, 1.375v is way too much voltage for 3.8Ghz :| What's your batch number?

You have a great chip. I need 1.3875 for 3.8 with HT to be stable, and to me that is way too much voltage for 24/7.

I'm sittin at 3.4 (200x17) with 1.29 and Pll at 1.82 with HT on. I'm ILP stable at 30 passes, and have ran Prime (small, large, and blend) for 24hr each without failure. I would like a DO, but I'm not going to as the jump to 3.8 will not return anything I need.
 
Well, tomorrow i will change my c0 for a d0 ... i will stay with the P6T Deluxe motherboard for now.... I was able to sell my C0 🙂

1.38 is fine for 3.8 with HT on. That's a 400MHz difference from 3.4. Don't fret it, a few degrees means nothing to the CPU and technically that VCORE is still within safe operating limits set by Intel. If you were doing 200x19 at 1.375ish (BIOS) that's where mine is and it runs great - on air. Loaded temps in the 70's (Linpack) but real use (encoding video - 8 processes total load 80-98%) temps are in the upper 50's to around 60 or so. Plenty of margin. Going higher it wants voltage like a junkie wants stash. I don't have to touch voltage by turning off HT and can do 191x21 but encoding is actually slower. HT ON at 191x21 wants 1.525V(!) to run Linpack stable AND it's on the brink of throttling with temps in the lower 90's. This is a 940, 1 of 2 and the other one is of nearly the same performance from overclocking standpoint.

Best of all what I like about these i7's compared to Penryns - No artifacts in encoded outputs! I could reach 4GHz+ Prime/Linpack stable for DAYS on my QX9650 yet I had to back all the way down to 3.6GHz to be artifact free. I had four chips and they all exhibited the same issue (prime/occt/linpack stable) but would produce errors or even crash the encoder completely! With the i7 it either works or does not. I've never even seen a core crash in Prime when pushed too far - the machine just halts with a BSOD or kernel panic.

You may have pulled the trigger too fast on selling that C0. You could easily get a Dud0! I'd never part with something unless my mind was made up and I did not want it at all. IMHO

That's very true. I scratched my head at this, only once I've seen a calculation error in Linx during my overclocking session, all other trials have been indisputable BSODs.
 
It's probably a good thing as it can just crash the system rather than produce erroneous data which is my biggest fear in overclocking. (video with artifacts)
 
i dont know if my p6t deluxe have a bios optimized for D0s. would like to know if anandtech test that motherboard after reading teh D0 article.
im getting one of these when tank guys have em in stock
