I just picked up a respire t20 for a little extra cooling on the i7. When OC to 3.6ghz Prime95 tops out temps for the cpu at around 80c, that seems really hot. I tried following the guide over at OC.net but as i have a different board i cant seem to get the right settings, my goal would be ~3.8ghz or 4.0. Im not sure thats possible with this cpu cooler but its only dropped my temps by about 5c, i would think it would have helped more.

What tim are you using? Have you considered an aio watercooler? My i7 920 c0 gets to ~75c @ 3.8 after runing prime for a few hrs also have a w3520 that does the same @ 4.0. I dont think most apps will stress the cpu as much as prime or ibt will. Try leaving realtemp running while gaming or doing whatever it is you do with your comp and see what the temp peaks at under normal use.

If you want to get close to 4.0 Ghz you will need an $80+ cooler.

80C is not hot with these chips. I run DC 24/7 for over 3 years (or is it four now?) at that temp (3927 Mhz 1.264v, HT on)

Make sure you set core voltage manually, if you let it auto it will be way to high and hotter.

That seems very hot for 3.6Ghz. What voltage are you using, and what's your ambient room temp?

My i7-930 @ 4.0Ghz gets to about 77C under full load, but I do have a high quality HSF.

Both of these guys are spot on you will need a better cooler if you want to keep a 920 @ 3.8 to 4.0 esp if HT is on.

So i have it clocked at 3.7ghz with ht off and i seem to be stable, as well as temps went own. with ht on temps were hitting 80c. with ht off they are just reaching 70c full load with prime.

Still should opt for a better cooler. Why get an i7 if you're not going to take advantage of HT?

try 3.8 with ht on, as said, under most usage you wont get anywhere near 80c

80c is really no big deal on those chips at all, some high leakage ones that clock really well will go sky high no matter what cooling you throw at them (short of sub-ambient). Tight memory timings and/or high memory speeds also seem to make temps jump a considerable bit in my experience on these.

because there's no such thing as an S1366 i5 or i3? just like there isn't an i5 or i3 s2011.

Temps are no problem unless you at >100C.
80C seems correct given the wimpyness of that cooler.
At 4.2GHz, my temps can hit 97-98, basically just short of 100 under p95/linpack.

that seems insanely high even while running prime

this old c0 is running a 1.36v for 3.8 and still rarely ever goes over 80c

I've had my 930 @ 4.1 (4 cores)/4.3 (1 core) w/HT on for more than 3 years now. Vcore is 1.296v under load after vdroop.

The cooler I ended up using is a Corsair A70 that I got for $20 with a couple of 100cfm fans mounted to it. It keeps temps down to 81C while running Intel Burn Test. Total cost: $36.

ran ibt on normal 8 threads 100 times and it creeped up just over 80c @ 3.8 so might be worth while to replace that cooler with something better

I always run IBT on max.

It's true that you need some heavy metal to cool an overclocked Bloomfield. The first cooler I used on it was a CM Hyper 212 Plus, which was totally inadequate for serious overclocking. I bought the A70 on a lark because it was $20 and was pleasantly surprised by how well it worked. It's too bad that Corsair stopped making them. :(

BTW, if it's 80ish while running IBT, it won't get nearly that hot in normal usage. I run HandBrake all the time and the hottest it gets is 73C in a 24C room.

then shouldn't really be an issue, I don't like seeing mine go over 80, not sure what temp in this room is but im pretty content with the temps. im not a fan of how huge a lot of the air coolers are, which is why I went with the H70.

Just a quick revive on this thread. So im at 3.8Ghz with HT on and I hit 80C with p95. my vcore is 1.25. If I lower the core volt ill get lower temps?

My AsRock X58 extreme has the worse vdroop at or above 180 blck.
Do to the poor vcore control I gave up with IBT on this 17-930 years back.
My extreme will run a solid at 200-202 blck and needs a minimum of 1.3187 - 1.37v at 4200 for normal use games and web.

Keep lowering the core volts until it will not stay running under load. Then put volts back to last good setting.

Looks like you have good settings already!

And remember my 920 has been at 80C all day and night every day for four years under full load!

So I did with all your help! Im stable at 4ghz @1.23v. Well 3.8ghz with ht/tb on. puts me at 4.01ghz. Load temps were 77c, which is about 10c lower then before I reseated the heat sink and fan.
