If you had this choice, since both of these configurations would be about the same price.

Cheaper motherboards and RAM, put an i7 860 build ~$150 less than an i7 $920.

If your building now. i7 920 with a 5850 unless you have a 2500x1600 monitor. If you do go for the 5870.

Just how cheap are you talking about? You can get x58 mobo's for $200, as for ram you're getting less of it so its not really cheaper.

P6T is $249, versus P7P55D which is $149. $75 difference in the 4GB and 6GB low latency DDR3-1600 kits I priced.

Is that a serious thread?

The 2 processors are more or less a wash at non-overclocked speeds and D0 may hit 4.2-4.3 on air while 860 will do 4.0ghz....but you are comparing 2x the gpu power

I think the 5870X2 system will be more costly though, but undeniably quicker.

I was answering on the basis that the Op had a few bucks and would eventually want one of those 6/8 core monsters intel plans on for socket 1336.
I don't believe the 1156 socket has those options, does it?

I thought the 1336 socket was for enthusiast gamers.

And don't waste your money on low latency memory. You're still looking at around a $50-75 difference between the two mobo/cpu/ram setups. But you get a 16x/16x/8x mobo, rather than 8x/8x/4x (pfft), more memory capacity and six core possibility in the future.

Yeah I don't understand what he's getting at. The ASrock Extreme is like 170, can do 16/16/8 I believe and how exactly are you comparing 6gb ddr3 kits to 4gb ddr3 kits, that's just silly...

No just looked it does 16/16/4, but that's still better than anything you can get on a 1156 socket, unless they get extra pci-e lanes from somewhere.

You might be interested in 5850 crossfire if you overclock. The price would be on par with the x2, plus they are available next week. given your two choices, i'd go 860 + x2.

I didn't follow the whole thread but didn't you just post or read 1156 will be replaced by 1155?

I'll stick to Asus motherboards... maybe Gigabyte. And I don't care about extra PCI-E lanes for multiple cards. I'm not concerned with SLI or Crossfire. Actually wish they would make a simpler X58 board with a single 16x graphics slot.

No interest in Gulftown. Will keep whatever I buy soon until Sandy Bridge in 2011.

after reading all your comments I would say definitely go 860 + 5870x2. Just be prepared to wait a few weeks, depending on when 5870x2 actually releases.

Pretty obvious that between the 2 choices, 860 + 5870x2 is more useful given the OP's comments about no interest in Gulftown and no multi GPU.

But 75$ for 2GB of RAM? I don't get why people get the extra 2GB when comparing the 2 systems. You're obviously satisfied with the performance of 2x2GB in dual channel and rarely anyone needs the tri-channel bandwidth. So, just get 2x2GB for the x58, not paying out the nose for nothing.

This sounds weird, but I would get 4x1gb instead of 2x2gb if you're trying to keep the costs more equal. It would probably be a little bit more, but not enormously so and certainly not $75. It would only go out of tri-channel mode in the very rare occurance that you use more than 3gb.

Even dual card SLI or Crossfire is fine on Lynnfield. When you get to 3 and 4 high-end card set-ups, you start to see a limitation. Anyway, I'd grab an 860 and a 5870X2, no questions asked.
