i7 3820 or E5-2670??

Which one is better??
3820 is only 4 cores with 8 threads but can overclock like crazy while the E5-2670 is 8 cores with 16 threads and cant overclock and is pretty much stuck at a max clock of 3.3Ghz maybe can squeeze 3.6Ghz outta of her.
Which one is faster or stronger and best over all for CAD,Video Editing,Compression, and some gaming??
I only ask for these 2 cpu's cause I can get either of my choice for a super deal but I have to make a decision pretty quick here...
 
Ok E5-2670 it is but before I pull the trigger does anyone here actually have one of these 8 core cpu's??
Hey Gillbot dont you have one?? If so how are they cause I have heard mixed reviews and I dont wanna regret my new purchase.
 
I don't have one, I run a 3930k. (Lucky I happened to browse across this thread too!)

I have a 3930k over in FS/FT up also. 😉
 
Is there anyone who has one on this forum that can give me there opinion??
I would assume 3.3Ghz 8 core and 16 thread cpu would be enough to rip through any game for the next say 5 years as long as I stay current with future GPU's??
I am needed said cpu for rendering and highly threaded apps and multitasking.
What I dont want or need is a dual socket setup so I figured this would be a good route for my needs.
 
Well, everyone around here is making the assumption that since the new consoles are on 8-cores cpu's then the new games will get optimized for multicore.

Anyhow, there is a clear trend towards multi-threading, I don't see why games wouldn't follow it, especially considering the move in console market.

Because the majority of the consumers dont have 8 core CPUs.
 
If they're such a super deal, buy them both and sell them for profit, and then get the CPU that is most appropriate for your needs. An OCed 4930K would probably be a better fit for you.

Really though to be serious I just figured a super powered cpu like the E5-2670 at this price shouldn't be passed up and isnt 3.3Ghz more then enough for gaming??
 
What's the deal you have? A 3820 is around $300, and the E5-2670 is ridiculous. Can you get the Xeon for $300?!?!. Buy a 4771(TSX) on a Gigabyte UD5 Z87 or a 4930K on ASUS; I seriously doubt you'll severely tax either one... Both would be better gaming chips than what you're looking at. The added benefit to the 4771 is more and more of your apps will use it's functionality... the benefit of the 4930K is that it has more, OCable cores, and management built-in. The 4930K will be faster than the Xeon E5, with a MILD OC, in all things.

Sure, it'll be fine! It's like a $1500 CPU. Depending on whether your software is maxxing out all those cores, you still might be better off trading it for a 4930K, which, when OCed, will give much superior single-threaded performance which will make it faster in almost everything but the heaviest apps. Not to mention you'll have a lot of extra dough to spend on cool hardware.
 
Buy a i7 4771 non K and run all cores at turbo speed or a 4770k if you really have the OC frenzy.

For the money of the xeon cpu you can upgrade on a yearly cadence three times!
You don't need 8 cores for gaming now and when that will be the case you'll just upgrade.

It's almost never worth buying a xeon platform unless that computer runs software that earns you money.
 
I didnt think the 4930K was out yet?? and the deal for the E5-2670 is through a local computer shop which i am friends with the owners son of who got back a faulty server... but the cpu checked out ok to be working and was offered to me for a discounted price of around $500.
But I get no heatsink and no warranty on said item.
but like I said $500 for a $1400 cpu isnt so bad but if every ones telling me not to then im am listening.
I am very interested in the 4930k as well but the way I see it with the E5-2670 I will be a full generation ahead of everyone since I will be running a 8 core 16 thread cpu while everyone else is still stuck on 6 core 12 threads..
I have till tomorrow to make up my mind before it goes to the person so what should I do?? I dont wanna jump te gun but I dont want to miss out on a hell of a deal..

I would buy both. Then sell the one you don't want. Both being 2011 socket, it's a no brainer. If you are into the 4930K least buy the E5, test it so that you know it works = provide proof, and then sell it. The market may be small but as long as you don't sell it at retail prices you're sure to make a few bucks..

Well. If you really think that MOAR COARZ!!!™ have an intrinsic value, go for the Xeon. Of course the single-threaded performance will be on par with the slowest i3 Intel currently sells.

If you are willing to overclock, the 4930K (which should launch any day now) will be better. An overclock of 4.0 GHz should be easily achievable. Given that the E5-2670s all-core turbo is 3.0 GHz, overall multithreaded performance would be similar; single-threaded performance of the 4930K will be ~25% higher (clocks+IPC increase). And of course you could always go for higher overclocks, maybe only on a few cores to improve gaming/interactive performance (may matter for CAD editing I suppose).

Do you get a deal on a server motherboard too, or what would be the costs of that compared to a S2011 board? While S2011 boards are expensive, I doubt that server boards are cheaper.

Of course a 4771 may be enough as well, but without detailed information on your software and usage patterns (do you work with CAD/VidEditing 1h/day, 6h/day, 12h/day?) it's impossible to properly weigh the advantages/disadvantages of the different CPU options.
 
Get the E5-2670, test it, see if you are loading all the cores 100% much of the time. If you are not, wait for the 4930K to come out (matter of days, now) and sell the 2670 to pay for the 4930K, which is ahead of the 2670 because it is Ivy-E, so it has higher IPC, and will clock at least 1GHz higher.
 
No, No server board will be used I was going to use it on the motherboard I already purchased which is the GA-x79-UP4. Nothing is included with the E5-2670 just the cpu it self. The reason I am looking at the 3820 which is socket 2011 is because its starting clock is 3.6Ghz and can be overclocked to 4.5-5.0Ghz very very easily. Plus its only $270 versus $500. I cannot buy both cpu's as I am very strapped for cash right now so it has got to be one or the other. I would love to get me a 4930K also so should I just wait a few more days and say screw the E5-2670 altogether?? I will be using CAD for school, and learning graphic design for making games ect.. Not sure how long I will be on there each day but maybe some of you that are doing the same thing or have gone the same route may know better than me.I also stay on for a couple hours a day for personal interests such as visiting these forums and watching stuff on youtube ripping movie's and cd's for my media server at home.

That's a very good price but that cpu is not fully unlocked. Are you sure you can get it to those frequencies? Considering the stuff you're into, 2670 is a much better option for the long term.
 
So you don't recognize the opportunity that getting a $1500 CPU for $500 represents?

I totally see the opportunity and that its a super deal but half of the people are saying dont bother and the other half is saying get it and dont look back.
I wish everyone would agree and help me make up my mind.
I am freaked out at the moment that if I get it I would be making a huge mistake and miss out on peoples advice to purchase something else.
So lets do it like this, based on the next 3-5 replies or votes thats what I will base my purchase on.I have an hour left so please reply everyone.

Intel i7 3930K for $570
