i7 2600k stock cooler overheats

Idle (youtube/winamp/internet) : ~30C
UEFI: 60C+
Prime 95/Linx : 90C+

Speed: Stock (3.4 Ghz)

I have not used any thermal paste, only the one which was already applied to the stock cooler (by intel)

This leads me to believe I did something wrong while installing the cooler

Try and push the cooler from side to side. If you can move it then it's not secured correctly which is very common.

I don't have any more 'tim', can I just pull it off and use the same tim to install it again (hopefully right this time) ?

Don't pull it off. Push down directly on the center of the heatsink.. Don't worry you won't break anything and resecure the push pins.

I was getting 87c max temps on my stock cooler but I was using very old thermal paste. I switched over to a CM Hyper 212+ and new AS5 and getting 65c max load temps. Idle I'm around 40c.

What's a safe limit for the new SB chips? With my 2500k @ 4.2 (1.26v), I'm idling at around 30C and loading at 55-60C with my Hyper 212+.

Max Tjuntion is supposedly 100C, but most people want to keep max load temps in the 80C's or below.

I just shut down my pc and tried to push the cooler...I couldn't...It doesn't move at all, it's pretty good attached.

That is correct. Tcase is the maximum temperature of the IHS etc. TJmax is the maximum temperature of the transistor junctions.

Which temp do the temp sensors read? If they are saying 72c are they referring to the IHS or the transistor junctions? Or somewhere in between?

Tcase: The thermal specification shown is the maximum case temperature at the maximum Thermal Design Power (TDP) value for that processor. It is measured at the geometric center on the topside of the processor integrated heat spreader.

I am under the impression the stock cooler is crap. I dont know why Intel didn't include that big one they were sending out for testing with the 2600K.

I am about a low 30~ at Idle and tempts constantly rise to 80c until i just shut prime 95 down. This is at with everything running stock - no OC.
At first I went 4.0 ghz, ran prime95, and shut it off at 80c.
After that I went back to stock 3.4, ran prime and shut it off at 80c. I dont want to see how hot it can get.

I dont know how hot a chip will get when running prime 95 for an hour but since this is considered "FULL LOAD" would that mean the stock cooler from intel is not even sufficient to run a 2600K at full load? I haven't built a PC in a long time but i am pretty sure its seated correctly and there isnt TOO much extra (if extra at all) thermal compound on the CPU.......I used the "2 rice size portions rubbed on the chip with your finger covered in plastic" method.

Can anyone recommend a better heatsink at the Hyper 212 pricepoint.

And if I were to step it up....I dont care too much about costs would i be fine getting any of the heatsinks on this top 10 list?

You generally don't want to go over 70C with any CPU because the computer would start getting strange problems.

OP: What utility do you use to measure temperature? Is that the one that comes with your board? If then, what's the board?

TJMAX is what you need to worry about it. That is rated at 100 on these cpus. So long as you stay clear of that you are ok. Obviously you don't want to be hanging around in the 90s, but the 80's is ok.

I ran my Q6600 with load temps in the high 70's for three years with no issues.

Saying that, obviously 90+ on stock freq is way too high. Clearly the heatsink is not seated correctly.

I will take your word on it and try to reseat the heatsink. As this is my first time working with this socket.....what more is it than inserting the chip........gently placing the heatsink pins in holes and then pushing them down diagonally hearing them click into place?

The clip things are terrible. I don't know why Intel continues to use them.

Sometimes they sound like they click but only go in half way. Try to see if you can move the heatsink. If it moves at all, then it is not seated well.

1. Before installing, make sure you haven't accidentally turned any of the black plastic screw clockwise. Before you install the heatsink, it should always be in the counter-clockwise position
2. After you push them in and hear a click sound, make sure each pins are flush with the motherboard, no gaps and such
3. If you haven't put in the board yet, you can check the back as well

I know, since as far as I can recall the Q6600 is a 65nm chip!
