Not sure where atl got his numbers but they actually look pretty reasonable, in line with what I'd expect from those setups. Assuming of course that the encoding software takes full advantage of all 12 Opteron cores...

To the second portion, most editing software is single threaded so you're only going to be using one core while doing that portion of the work. And since 1 2600k core is about 2x the performance of 1 Opty core @ 2.6GHz the editing will be sluggish and take twice as long if you opt for the Opty.

So you need to look at what amount of time is used for various tasks (editing versus encoding) to see which will actually be better.

One final factor to consider: even if the initial cost is equal up front, the dual Opteron system is going to cost far more long term due to much higher energy consumption.

Thanks again for all your help guys, the dual opteron sounded ideal initially for the work he needs to do, but it is sounding more and more like the I7 is the real winner here.

I'll report back on what he decides, but I will keep you guys informed.
Thanks again!

Nice cars ExarKun... the Z has too much fishtail I bet the WRX pownz it in handling.

I think the Z is quicker tho its a 370. Very cool. enjoy them.

Thanks man, appreciate it. They are both a blast to drive, and having the WRX as a 'fun' car during the cold times is great. Escpecially since winter these days lasts about 6 months out of the year. :D

Rendering performance might be better with Opterons but your friend will need to deal with all the shortcomings of server boards. Usually no built-in sound, very few USB ports (2~4, forget firewire or eSATA let alone USB 3.0), large footprint, might require two separate power cables for CPUs, etc. All of these for price "premium".

Does he do it for a living? If not I won't bother with server stuff.
