yes yes. These guys helped me figure that out and i am indeed going for the i5 2500K and im tilting towards the P8Z68-VPro.
Regarding SSDs, i kept seeing a lot of SIGs with SSDs and i actually thought earlier that they were just smaller sized HDDs. LOL. As i said, noobness. Have been reading up the sticky on SSDs which brilliantly explained everything. So im planning to get an SSD as well. Have a tiny little question which ive posted on the sticky as well. Might very well be a dumb question. After i've installed Windows on a 200GB SSD, can i use the remaining space to install games or any other program that i may need to run faster???

Both the 2600k and 1100t are waste of money for gaming, get a 2500k and save some cash and buy a ssd if you don't have it.

How is a 1090t a waste of money when it's $60 cheaper than a 2500k and the performance differential in properly made PC games tends to be almost unnoticeable?

I like how u've mentioned "properly made pc games". I'm sure youre mentioning GTA IV or L.A.Noire here.

Go play a game like Battlefield 3 on two PCs running the same hardware except different processors accordingly and come back and talk to me.

Yes. User side, SSDs work just like hard drives.

hmm so i think ive understood SSDs quite well thanks to that sticky. But WOW, they're expensive.

Yes you can use the remaining space to install games, software or for storage.

hmm so my final purchase would include the following:
1. i5 2500K
2. P8Z68 -VPRO(default or Gen3 depending on Price, though i dont think Gen3 has any other feature except PCIe 3.0 which only the 7970 HD has atm as per my knowledge)
3. Corsair H100 CPU cooler (cos i am definitely going to overclock my system in the near future)
4. Some 80 GB SSD. Still donno which though. May have to read up a bit more.

I would like to thank all of you for your wonderful tips without which i would've definitely spent a lot more than what i will be spending now. Cheers.

Hey there jungle dude. Get an i7 2600K if you want one, I did. It's not all about gaming performance and what others do. I don't rebuild but every three years or so. I've been running the Phenom II X6 3.2ghz (1090T I think it's called) and it's been a great cpu, I love it. Have an I7 2600K sitting on my workbench, new motherboard, memory, heatsink/fan (I don't watercool,) and more. Took me many months to select and buy, I don't like to rush it. Suggest that you don't either. But then, you are probably some young guy who works much faster than I do.

I've been using the Crucial 256GB m4. It's the only way to go for your OS + programs. I recommend at least 128GB for this, I believe the 128GB SSDs are at the sweet price point now. The SSDs with the new Sandforce controller are probably the fastest and hopefully they have worked out the bugs in their firmware. I'm a long time Crucial fan, that's why I chose the m4. I also chose a Z68 motherboard, nice choice. You might be glad to have chosen a PCIe 3.0 board a year from now, not sure about that. I didn't and I already regret it especially because the Z68 chipset seems to have not so many PCIe lanes available so if they run at twice the bandwidth, that's a good thing.

Ok then I'm going to make some more tea >====>Stephen

Im 27. And I don't know whether that classifies as young or old. I have been searching around the net for info regarding processors since the last month. Well atleast the 10 mins i get everyday. To be honest, I thought I knew a lot about computers, but well, I don't. Thats where you guys help.

I do a rebuild around 3 years time as well. My current PC is an X4 955 BE with a really crappy motherboard. I have an ATI HD 5870 which i plan to use for atleast a year more before i jump to the 6990 or preferably the 7970. I have read about the i5 and the i7 2600K processors and know for sure that other than hyperthreading and the 2mb extra cache, the i7 offers nothing more. And for a huge price difference, its not worth it.

And i will definitely read up about the Crucial 256GB m4. i also get your point about the minimum 128GB SSD. Thank you so much for your inputs.
Have fun with your tea :)

if you're going for 2500k cm 212 evo is enough.

If you are going to run a single graphics card in your rig, any Z68 motherboard should do fine. Even when it comes to overclocking. Look at what features you need instead.

What if he really wants to play an 'unproperly' made game?

I generally buy AMD, and I honestly think that most people would never be able to tell the difference in the vast majority of games at resolutions that we actually game at between an i5 and a Thuban. But, when building from the ground up, I think it's pretty hard to justify AMD these days, unless you know you need the cores... and as you've pointed out, most games are not 'properly made' so I'd rather have the IPC and clockspeed of i5. Now, if he can get a much better deal with the AMD stuff, it's good enough almost every time. But, assuming the prices are near one another, it's hard to justify the AMD chip in a gaming rig.

So 27 is Old. Ther goes my youth. Anyways, i just wanted to let you guys know that i have already purchased the i5 2500K, the Corsair H100 and GSkill Ripjaws 2 X 4 Gig (they were dirt cheap and reviews everywhere were good).
My hardware guy did not have the Gen 3 P8Z68 V-Pro and he wanted me to get the non-Gen3 one. But i told him that i'll wait and asked him to order a gen3 one for me. They're practically for the same price and obviously after reading your inputs, i decided to go for the gen 3 one.

One very weird thing popped up though while i was reading the reviews for the H100. It seems the temperature of the coolant changes w.r.t ambient temperature and adjusts itself to the same. I live in India where ambient temps can go up as high as 40°C and sometimes even more than that. Will that cause me a problem???

I just wanted to praise the above quote. My benchmark for a better system recently has been its ability to play GTA IV. Being quite honest here. Its the worst PC port till date and if a PC can handle it with decent framerates then the PC is a monster. Let me clarify that I do not play GTA IV and am not a fan. But i just use it as a means of testing the strength of my PC.

im just kidding w/ old :D yes it changes to min-max if your cpu needs it,im pretty sure it can hadle 40°c for my temps here are around 28-30 also depends on the OC your going for.

27 is **ANCIENT.**

But seriously, using an SSD with the current Intel is almost required. Really helps a lot on any platform but on Intel removing the disk I/O bottleneck really makes the thing fly. The bigger the SSD, the better the performance.

Now, Intel has Ivy Bridge, the Sandy Bridge die shrink, coming out in a month or two. At this time, I would actually hang on and wait until that appears. Someone here advised me to do the same thing when I was about to build an i7 rig a few weeks before SB came out.

No need to thank me, I'm just paying it forward. :D

IMHO if you current PC is stil running i would wait till april when Ivy Bridge comes out which will be a bit faster and use less power (= overclocks better) for the same price as a 2500k now is.

GTAIV plays fine with 4 cores. The problem is having less than that.

im looking for a build that'll last me at least a year or 2 from now. I know its a lot of time but will the i5 2500K last me that long?? Budget is not really that much of an issue but i dont wanna go overboard.

I don't really have a computer budget other than "don't spend more than $10k per year", but I still bought a 2500k a couple months ago. It sips power, it's just as good for gaming as a CPU that costs 5x as much, and it overclocks like mad on a cheap CPU cooler. It's the modern day q6600, you could use it for 5 years easily.

Depends how much money you got to spend. The 2600K is faster is a lot cases, but doesn't justify spending double the cost of an X6.

So i'll leave it at this, are you looking forward more to Haswell or Piledriver?

What does that question have to do with this post? Neither Haswell or Piledriver has been released so we can only guesstimate their release. AMD's poor marketing performance as to the release date on the Bulldozer makes me believe that Intel will deliver the Haswell before we see the Piledriver but the poster asked between an Intel 2600k and an AMD 1100T. IF you can find a new 1100T they sell for @$199 vs $330 for the 2600k. The 2500k is $230. You can buy the 2600k or the 2500k right now as I type this. Let's not mince words. They are both faster than the 1100T. Faster is a relative term. All I can say is my 2500ks OC'd to 4532 are faster than my 1100T OC'd to 3952 but the speed increase isn't so great that I would call it a significant difference for the games I play.

If you are going to buy a new mb, new ram and new cpu, I cannot in good conscience recommend the 1100T over an Intel 2500k. The better overall OCing ability, better memory performance and better power usuage of the Intel 2500k make it the choice.

GTAIV plays fine with 4 cores. The problem is having less than that.

My AMD Phenom X4 955 BE at 3.1 Ghz with an ATI 5870 couldnt handle it well enough. And by well enough i mean on settings of the higher end. But as i said earlier, my mobo was a piece of joke and could have well been the reason.

It's the modern day q6600, you could use it for 5 years easily.

Thats good news:)

Thanks man. Appreciate the help.
