Hi guys,

I'm building a machine after a loooong time and need your help. My main use for this system would be emulating networking hardware which requires a lot of processing power and RAM so that's my main concern. I'm not going to be doing gaming so the video card is not an issue. I've been doing some research for the last few hours and have put together some components for a high-end system. I'd really appreciate all your suggestions and advice on the below configuration:

Asus P8P67 Deluxe Socket 1155 Intel P67 Chipset ........................... 239.99
Intel Core i7-2600K Quad-Core Socket LGA1155, 3.40Ghz, 8MB L3 Cache ....... 339.99
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series DDR3 1600MHz (PC3-12800) 16GB (4x4GB) ............ 209.99
OCZ Vertex 3 SSD .......................................................... ?
SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s .......... 64.99
XFX ATI Radeon HD 5770 XXX Edition ........................................ 154.88
Antec TP-650 Truepower New 650W Continuous Power Supply .................... 99.99
Antec Nine Hundred Two V3 ATX Mid Tower Ultimate Gamer Case ............... 129.99
Noctua NH-D14 Six Heatpipe Dual Radiator CPU Cooler ........................ 89.99
LG CH10LS20 Black 10x Blu-ray Read 16x DVD+/-R/RW Write Combo Drive ........ 74.99
Logitech Illuminated USB Keyboard /w Palm Rest, Backlit -Black ............. 44.99
Logitech RX1500 Black 3 Buttons Tilt Wheel USB Corded Laser Mouse .......... 34.88
Dell U2311H 23 HD Widescreen LCD Monitor ..................................
Dell U2311H 23 HD Widescreen LCD Monitor ..................................

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
................................................................ Sub-total 1484.67
.................................................................... Taxes. 193.01
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
.................................................................... Total 1677.68

All prices are from Canada Computers. Are they ok or do you think they are high.

For the display, I'm looking into dual displays (21" or larger). Anyone care to mention a few decent ones? Response time is not an issue. I do care about good text reproduction, colors and sharpness.

My heartfelt thanks to all who reply.

Try newegg.ca

your ram doesn't need to be 1600mhz, if you get plain old 1333mhz CL9 it should be $160 for 16GB
Your PSU is over kill, 400w is MAX
I have seen your GPU at $99 on newegg
you don't need a $240 motherboard, one of the more basic P67 boards would be fine. ($150 tops)
Your HSF is nice, but sandy bridge runs cool, if oc'ing voltage (1.35v) is your limit, before heat is. The hyper 212+ saves you 50 bucks and gets the job done just as well.

That Powersupply is on sale for $39.99AR till March 10, you may want to pick it up now. It might be a little bit of overkill as suggested by mnewsham atm but I think it is a great PS.

Don't go with Canada Computers, horrible service. Try newegg.ca or ncix.com(they price match anything).

The CPU can be had for $20 cheaper at directcanada http://www.directcanada.com/products...ufacture=INTEL

I wouldn't recommend you ordering all these parts separately but I think you should price match all at NCIX and save on shipping.

**Canada Computers does not carry Samsung drives. Newegg I think is the only reputable seller who does sell them in Canada.**

True. Everything on the list except the Samsung HDD is from Canada Computers. I put the price for the HDD from newegg.ca

How does the price-match thing work with NCIX?

Add everything you want to buy to your cart, then when checking out there is a button called price match. Just enter in the price and the link of the competitor. They will review it and if it is a authorized dealer then they will match it.

Give them a call or email, they will help you out. Where from Canada are you if you don't mind me asking.

Toronto. There's a bunch of Canada Computers shops around here and they usually have cheap prices but I agree that what they offer in cheap prices is more than compensated in customer service. 🙁

Yeah, I'm from Toronto as well. Mississauga area. Take a look at bestdirect.ca . They offer free shipping and also pricematch however you will have to call in to them for price matching.

Their prices also seem to lower than newegg and canada computers.

Are you sure you need the "Deluxe" mobo? AFAIK, the Deluxe has SLI and some minor differences to the non-Deluxe.

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series DDR3 1600MHz (PC3-12800) 16GB (4x4GB) ............ 209.99
Very very few applications benefit from faster ram. You need to find out if what you're using this computer for will benefit.

XFX ATI Radeon HD 5770 XXX Edition ........................................ 154.88
If you're not gaming, why are you getting a 5770? Is the IGP not good enough for "emulating networking hardware?"

Antec TP-650 Truepower New 650W Continuous Power Supply .................... 99.99
For $40, it's a good deal, though it's severe overkill.

Antec Nine Hundred Two V3 ATX Mid Tower Ultimate Gamer Case ............... 129.99
Perhaps the Fractal Design R3 is worth considering as an alternative?

Ah, that's right. I should have been more clear and suggested getting an H67 mobo.

Thanks for your suggestions. Looking at the configuration, some components do seem unnecessary. As a result, I have downgraded the mobo from Deluxe to just P8P67. I still want to overclock so H67 is not an option. I'll also downgrade the GPU. Will look into the 5450. Maybe even the RAM and the PSU.

Will post an updated build soon.

Different account?

AFAIK, pretty much any graphics card is capable of running at least two monitors. You just need to make sure it has the outputs you want.

I'm not certain about Intel IGPs, but my ATI HD4200 IGP is capable of dual displays (one VGA and one DVI or HDMI).

One nifty thing I found out recently is AMD's "Surround View." You can use an AMD discrete GPU and an AMD onboard IGP concurrently to drive multiple monitors. I don't really have much use for more than 2 monitors, but it's kinda fun just to try out.

If you're in Canada than the only retailer you're gonna wanna shop at is NCIX; their shouldn't be any other option..

BTW, if you don't feel like building it NCIX will do it for you at an additional rate of $50 (cable management, install the OS and all)

A few comments:
- I'm not sure that you want to overclock a research machine.
- Unless your emulator is highly threaded (I doubt it), the 2600 offers little to no benefit over the 2500.

But I do. 🙂

I don't want to compromise on the CPU or the RAM. Some of my colleagues who have built their systems for similar purposes are complaining about 6GB RAM not being enough.
