Get the i7 because when the Thubans come out at the end of April, the i5s/i3s are going to be in a tough shape. The i7 gives you 4 cores plus 8 threads, still a powerful chip. The AMD Thubans will give you 6 cores. That leaves the i5/i3/C2D/C2Q in questionable territory. If you want to future-proof, switch to a LGA1366 i7 or wait for the Thubans.

Best bang for the buck on the Intel side in quads is a Core i5 750 overclocked to 4.0ghz. If you are on a budget, then consider the AMD platform or Core i3 and allocate the difference into the videocard. It all depends on how long you plan to keep the system. If you plan to keep it for more than 2 years, I'd spend the extra $60 now to get the Core i5 750 or a Phenom II X4 quad core processor.

What do you do ? I understand what you mean bang for the buck but the thing is let me explain this.

I can pretty much put my life on the line your CPU you have now has not gone to 100 percent throttle. Even rendereing video or audio it will not use 100 percent and games use 30 percent to 70 percent on your CPU. You are not going to see a difference with a i core chip, your already soo fast. Trust me on this no need to waiste money when the CPU you have now has never gone to full throttle,, that means you dont need a upgrade until your 100 load then u can say ok let me get a new processor with 8 cores.

I promise you will not see a difference in anything. Stick with yoru current rig my friend

My rig was born Nov 21 2007 ,, for DAW and gaming . Im a music producer and it has never gone over 67 percent, that was on a audio render.

BTW this applies for CPU being OCed or NOT.

Just chill relax, like many others should do and wait. I will never understand a Qxxx upgrade to i series.. As if you do anything important like render or something. lol :)

I am also happy to say I will never upgrade, until the time comes where there is a GPU inside a CPU chip . and thats 2020 lol nvidia and ati would be out of buseiness lol

Depends.
-Do you have any interest in upgrading the cpu in a year or two? This determines what socket you buy.
-Do you plan to run two graphics cards in xfire or sli?
-Are you going to overclock?

In my case, the answers were no, no, and no, so an i5 750 was an excellent choice. IMO, you don't have to oc this processor to consider it a good value. If you do plan on overclocking, you should get an i7 since they are much easier to oc and have more headroom.

I have an ancient E8400 and P35. It does everything i need perfectly. encoding movies, and playing sc2. you can probably find a C2D setup for cheap nowadays.

I am passing on the entire nehalem architecture as it seems like a waste of time and money to keep up with it.
