My PSU burnt out and may have taken the mobo with it. Should I get another mobo and hope the 2500k and RAM still work...

Or just replace the whole CPU/mobo/RAM combo - If so, what's the best bang-for-buck CPU/mobo? I rarely play BF4 anymore, but if I do I'd like to have similar performance to a 2500k. (I had a mild OC on it to 3.7 GHz)

If you can figure out if the CPU and mobo are OK then definitely keep them and pick up a new or used board. Nothing gained by buying an entirely new chip... especially if you weren't hurting for performance on the 2500k.

I would say try a new psu first and if it works then you are good to go.

Already got a brand new replacement (Corsair RM1000)

No beeps, and when I press power button, the motheboard LEDs turn on for half a second, then immediately off..

Do the hard drives and/or fans power up?

Don't think it spun up, I had only a case fan plugged in (along with the 8 pin CPU and 24 pin ATX power connector)

Send the CPU to someone you trust to check it for you. If it is fried, you'd be better off going with the latest platform, imo.

I'll bring over my RAM and CPU to a friend's this weekend to test out. Will update when I have any news. At least the SSD data is still intact, I was able to get my BTC out... phew.

If you've been looking for an excuse to upgrade, you have it... Though I would still verify if the CPU and other components are functional. Then you can decide if you want to keep it, or sell them and upgrade.

Testing out the CPU today. If the i5 2500k and ram turn out to be ok, what Mobo should I get - From a quick google search Z77 is the last choice for LGA 1155?

Z77, yeah. I like Gigabyte and Asus mostly, though recently I have used some AsRocks and they are OK too. You'll have to give a budget because they range widely in price. Stay away from the bottom of the barrel boards.

Budget... around $125 but don't mind spending a bit more if necessary. My last two mobos were both Gigabyte, and they've served me well so I'll probably stick to GB. The only feature I can think of that I *might* want (that wasn't on the last mobo) would be on-board Wifi.

My local computer store's website doesn't list any Z77 boards though, in case I can't find Z77s, are B75M and H61M viable alternatives?

I wouldn't go H61M, way too many features missing from that board's chipset. The B75 might be a viable alternative as long as you don't plan on overclocking at all. You should be able to find a Z77 online pretty easy though.

Found these possible Z77 options at my local store, both are around ~$130.

https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P8Z77M/overview/ (m-ATX, will it have any problems holding my 212 Evo?)

Edit: CPU and ram both booted up to windows in my buddy's machine, so I think we can conclude the main board is the culprit. right?

The computer shops had no Z77s in stock (I don't live in North America) so I got a cheap Asus B75M-A for $60. Couldn't justify shelling out for new CPU and Mobo...

I have a B75 board in my HTPC... it's a decent board and I like it. As long as the Asus board has all the features you need, you should be good to go... and, yes, your 212 EVO will fit no problem.

It does sound like the old board is bad since everything else checked out.

Computer is back up. Everything barely fits, it's cramped on an mATX board! The video card obstructs a few SATA ports so I need to get some right angle cables. W8 is installed but I'm having problems with Ethernet (I'm using 2 homeplugs) showing a 'limited connection' error message. I'll try plugging the LAN cable directly into my router to see if that helps.

I had to put the CPU fan on the left side, otherwise my ram won't fit.

Build looks very roomy and very nice, like it Op. :) Switch in some black sata ribbons for that wow factor.

Yes there's certainly a lot of room now in that huge case :)
And figured out I had a loose LAN cable on the router side so back online downloading updates.
