i5 2500k or i7 2600

I'm about to do a new build, and I currently have a i7 2600 without the "k" and I was thinking about buying a i5 2500k and overclocking it. Should I just use the i7 2600 or buy the i5 2500k. Which would out perform the other?

depends on what you want to do with it

a 2500k overclocked would beat i7 2600 on gaming etc(single/2-4 threaded processes), but lose out on video encoding (multi-threaded apps)

HT cores are... situational at best.

2500K at 4.4/4.5 would probably be very close or even beat a 2600 at stock for heavily threaded apps.

If you are a heavy gamer or can turn money on the deal, I'd probably switch to the 2500k. However, a 2600 at stock is still more than fine for nearly all gaming situations so it might not be worth the trouble.

Get the 2500K and an after market cooler in the $60 - $80 range. I would recommend either Noctua NH-U12P SE2 or the Corsair H60. The total price would be around the same but it would out perform the 2600 with stock cooling in almost all cases, barely anything uses more than 4 cores

2600k is less than 10 bucks more than 2600...

I'd hold onto the 2600 because I still havent heard any reason why you cant take the BCLK and split it off and run it through a divider to overclock without overclocking the pciE bus. Eventually some mobo mfg should do it. We're only talking about adding a 60 cent part to the board.
