i5 2500k idle temp kinda high?

at stock settings, the idle temps range from 35-42 degrees with a thermalright silver arrow. my friend, who has basically the same setup, except he's using the stock cooler, get's about the same temps. am i doing something wrong here?

Your idle temps matched my stock HSF with the 2500k.
I just put a Zalman HSF in last night and made comparisons.
Here's my raw data

IDLE

stock speed, stock HSF
36/36/39/38/38

stock speed, zalman HSF
31/29/32/32/32

Diff
5/6/7/6/6

TORTURE (prime95 + furmark)

stock speed, stock HSF
68/70/73/72/74

stock speed, zalman HSF
52/54/58/55/60

Diff
16/16/15/17/14

4.2 ghz - Zalman only numbers

idle
37/36/41/37/38

torture
55/58/62/59/65

Verify your mobo voltage to your CPU - I've seen a lot of numbers bandied about online, but I ran 1.25 @ stock 3.3, and I'm running 1.27 @ 4.3.

The number @ 4.3 hasn't been thoroughly vetted / tested / hammered on yet - just about 45 minutes of Prime.

My load temps range from 47-55 degrees. That is normal for a silver arrow, yes? But how come the temperature difference between each core is so different? The coolest core is 47 and the hottest one is 55.

Mine is running on 4.0 GHz with a stock cooler, and it's rotating at 75% of the speed. The average temperature is about 55 celsius, works quietly and super-fast, no crashes 🙂

Check your case, is the air flowing fine, try stringing the cables together. I've even replaced the internal DVD drive with a slim-external one to get more free space inside the tower.

What program to monitor temps?

Mine (2500k @ 3.8ghz for now) is around 35c idle and low 70c at load (Prime95).
HSF is AC freezer 7.
Ambient 79F.
HW Monitor and EasyTune6 for monitoring the temps.
How much in variances or impacts are there between Ambient vs Load temps that I want to know?

My 2500K @4.2 idles at around 29-31C. Load at around 60-64C, room temp ~74F(23C).

Scythe SCMG-2100 cooler, Antec Solo case.

How big of an impact or variance does the ambient temps have to do with internal thermal cooling/heating capabilities on a cpu?
For example: In my case the room temps is 79F (in the summer months) and my i52500k runs at 70c load.
How much lower in temps does my 2500k drop if room temp is around 70F (in the winter months)?

Coretemp, they do a nice little gadget aswell but you need the main program running in the background, don't worry it uses almost no system resources

Yeah I'm not worried about the background workload of any of the programs, just wondering if you've cross-checked with any others like realtemp or hwmonitor?
