I5-2500k and h61m mobo, core temp max 98C, upgrade time?

So I have a i5-2500k with MSI h61m-p23 motherboard, 12 GB ddr3 1600 ram, MSI gtx 670 OC edition. My core temps on realtemp reach 98C max when I play counterstrike global offensive. I want to achieve 300 fps constant on 5v5 and even in 32 man deathmatch servers.

What do you suggest best way to achieve this? I thought about upgrading stock cooler to cooler master 212 but the h61mobo doesn't allow you to OC so no real point doing this right? Also a new lga 1155 mobo costs more than a new lga 1150 mobo without being future proof. Don't really wanna spend $400 on a i7-4790k plus z87 unless it's worth it. I only really play games like cs go and global offensive

You willing to hit up the used market for an LGA 1155 board? If so, get a used ASUS board or something from eBay + Hyper 212+, and overclock that puppy. Should be good to go for a while.

If that turns out to not be enough performance, upgrade to Skylake in August.

Somebody on ebay is selling a lot of 22 x ASUS Sabertooth P67 P8Z77-V P8H61-I P8P67 DELUXE Motherboards for $30 apiece. If I could get my hands on a couple dozen 2500k's I could build some mean systems for resale. The platform is far from dead.

I don't see why you need any new parts.
For the temp issue, my first suggestion would be to take off the heatsink, clean out any dust, and reapply new thermal paste.
Next, think about case cooling. Maybe an additional fan or just moving fans around could help with that temp.
Sandy Bridge didn't run extremely hot at stock so your temps should be much better with just a few tweaks.
Anyway, the cpu should be fine I think. As for faster frame rates, maybe a gpu upgrade would be in order, but I'm not sure where you are now.

Lol I see it but they are selling all of them as a package. It looks like if I want to upgrade the mobo I'm still gonna have to spend around $80 for a z77 open box, z68 or p67 used which is about the price of a new / open box z87, which is a little hard to justify. Does i5-2500k support pcie 3 btw? Would I gain anything by upgrading to a 4790k?

Is there any reason why you want 300 fps? That's an insanely high fps. I can understand 120 fps. but 300 fps? I don't think any monitors out there can even refresh at that rate.

People with similar computer specs achieve this goal all the time with an i5-2500k and similar video card so just wanted to be up to par.

I would say go with a used Z77 board if possible. They have some nice features, and are good OCers generally.

There is no reason that your current setup should run that hot unless you have no airflow in your case at all. Reseat your heatsink with new thermal paste, clean out all the dust from your case, and make sure your case fans are working. Maybe get a new case fan if airflow is insufficient. And , of course, make sure you don't have cables blocking your airflow. And of course there is a point in getting a 212 EVO, even without OC'ing: lower temperatures mean longer lasting components, and less noise is always a boon. But simply making sure your cooler is seated properly, getting enough air, and free from dust should help you massively.

And yes, rendering 300FPS is useless. Even with a 120Hz monitor, you're wasting more than 50% of the output from your GPU. Wasted electricity, unnecessary heat, unnecessary noise. Plus, you might be seeing tearing due to the mismatch between monitor refresh rate and rendered frames. Turn on VSYNC, please.

Get a used Z77 or Z68 board from someone in fs/ft will allow you to overclock (mine took my 2500k to 4.9).

You don't need 300 fps. No screen will support that framerate.

Agree, this platform is far from dead, see my sig. I'm using a cheap Corsair A70 HS. Running the Intel Burn Test at max I get temps in the high 60's.

Step 1: Clean out your case and make sure the fans are working.
Step 2: If that doesn't work, buy a better cooler. If you upgrade later on, you'll most likely be able to re-use the new one, anyway.

That might be the necessary first step.

I tried overclocking my 2700K system without tweaking the voltage. They typically can go up to 4.2Ghz before you need to take volts off auto. This "test" was done with the stock heatsink, which I'd ordinarily just throw away or store for some unknown future use.

The temperatures were headed toward 90C before OCCT terminated for a selected 87C limit. By comparison, stock temperatures at stock speed were considerably lower and within even the TCase spec.

A 212 EVO would make a big, big difference with the OP's i5. Did I see where someone had OC'd to 4.5 or 4.6 with the EVO?

I guess the OP has an enthusiast "itch" right now, and that's normal. I'm scratching mine daily . . .
