Maybe I'm thinking of a different cooler. Isn't that the one where the heatpipes are in direct contact with the package, and the gaps between them have to be filled with gobs of TIM?

I think you are thinking of the 212 Plus, whereas the 212 Evo has been improved and doesn't have the gaps anymore. I just got the Evo and it's nice, cooled down my CPU by about 20C over the stock cooler.

The Hyper 212 EVO has a better base than the 212+ had.

My Corsair A70 has the following:

Which everyone should realize works perfectly fine :)

The base of the a70 and hyper 212+ are horrid, a heatsink should always have a flat smooth surface no matter what. Hence why the upgrade from the 212+ to the 212 evo drops temps.

As far as safety of overclocks it's barely over stock voltage and will last forever.

I agree, and thanks for all the input guys. It looks like the Evo will be fine. I like the way they finished the base, and I'm not surprised it lowered temps. I read that article on filling the gaps with TIM... and I'm just sort of bothered by having to do that. Nice to see they altered the design.

212's are excellent value coolers... they are nothing compared to the build quality of Noctua though. I own both designs.

I looked at the Noctua, but a little much to spend to cool a $219 chip. I don't want to probe the upper limits on air, just want to get a stable 4.4 at 60-ish C.

the 212 evo will easily do that. for games it will probably be in the upper 40s.

Does the 212 evo come with mounting brackets to fit a second fan in push/pull. I'm looking at it on a website and it seems to show a picture suggesting that but doesn't list it in the features list. If so will any 120mm fan work.

If you're short of $, then it's an easy choice. Also the fans at full speed sound different, it's like Ferrari and VW. But that's just my subjective feeling :)

Yes, it comes with 2 extra plastic fan mounting brackets, identical to the ones that came with the fan, along with the vibration dampening pads. From my brief research (i.e. Googling) you should get a 4-pin fan if you want the speed to be variably controlled by your mobo but this will require a splitter. Otherwise any good 120mm 3-pin fan would work.

I probably won't add a second fan for pull yet, I've heard it lowers the temps by a few more degrees but I've already got a 120mm exhaust fan in the back and I'm happy with temps as they are.

its not worth adding a second fan to the 212 for a basic oc. you would only get a drop of 1-2 C.

That is a perfect load temp of 64c.. Intel recommends 50's and 60's ....... 70's and 80's is just too high and will result in lesser life span... gl

Yeah, Speedfan was reading it wrong :). At 4.4 and 1.35v with all four cores at 100% it was getting into the 80's. The stock cooler just won't do it. I put an order in for an Evo.

Cool, you're gonna love the Evo!

Let us know the difference in temps before/after.
