there shouldn't be any reason why you can't overclock an i3, in fact it's probably pretty good at it. i'm assuming you mean for a desktop...

as for the studio 15 thing, that's pretty vague, but probably not. laptops are usually pretty limited in what processors they can handle due to power and heat management requirements, not to mention socket types. if your studio 15 has a core 2 cpu, then it won't be able to utilize an i5 since it's a different socket. not sure exactly what you mean by "with no BIOS".

thank you, and about the bios, i meant without having to modify it too much. I totally brainfarted though and forgot the i5 doesnt have 2 cores like the i3
but thank you :]

The i3-530, i3-540, i5-650, i5-660, i5-661 and etc all have 2 physical cores + 2 hyperthreading cores + an integrated GPU (733MHz on all but the 661 which is 900MHz).

On desktop boards, with appropriate settings, you can overclock both the CPU cores, and the GPU's independently.

if the studio 15 came with an i3 and you want to drop an i5 in there, im certain it will work.

although i would use the i5 in my very own rig though and put a low end CPU into the dell.

as far as OC'ing goes, im sure 4.0 will be the minimum with the 530 as long as you have quality choices as far as parts go. I see 4.4+ in the right hands.

not going to happen. mobile i3 uses a different socket than desktop i5.

and overclocking a dell laptop isn't going to happen either; inside or outside of the BIOS.
