well . . .

as long as it's stable, it's not dying

Yup, and through tweaking my mb again due to posting this thread I think I've stabilized it at 4GHz again with some small voltage adjustments.

Oh well, thanks again everyone. Maybe now I'll get that gtx 970.

4.2-4.4GHz easy with these 32nm 6 core chips. I use a W3690 in my Game rig, and an X5690 in my daily

3000 mhz ram is not going to let you play games like Crysis 3 or Watch Dogs any better

when I get some time I will download them and let you know, mabe even make a video.
so when did you have a i3?

all you have is a 960 though so you are gpu limited anyway...

I can lower a few settings and play most games @ 1080p at at least close to 60 fps, at least the ones I like to play. We shall see.

I dont need to have an i3. I already know from turning off just HT and/or disabling cores on my cpu how games act. are you going to be crazy enough to claim your 6100 is faster than my cpu without HT or even running just 2 cores with HT? plus reviews from sites and benchmarks from head1985 back this up. even russiansensation could tell you that even a 6600k can get pegged in some games like Assassins Creed Syndicate.

AGAIN you are going to be gpu limited anyway though.

yes but many settings impact the cpu not just the gpu. and I never said you could not get "close to 60 fps". I said you cant maintain 60 fps in some games.

that's not the same and you know it.
This is not an argument........ I want to see it for myself with my i3 6100, I'll buy a gtx970 if I have to.

it is most certainly the same. my cpu without HT or just using two cores with HT is faster than a 6100. if you dont believe that then you have no idea what you are talking about.

Scored a Xeon X5650 for $85. I'll try 4GHz right off the bat.

I hope you bought from a server outlet. Most people have been abusing them going beyond the Intel 1.35v Max recommended operating Vcore. I pushed my X5660 to 1.4v for > 4.4GHz and it degraded it.

Buy a used Core i7 980X and nab a GTX 970. Nice cheap upgrade that will probably last you for years. Then you can save up for a big overhaul in a few years' time.

The 980x is $200 used. He would be way better off with a cheaper Xeon. If he had tons of money to throw around, then he wouldn't be marginally upgrading a 5 year old cpu.

Wait. What motherboard are you dropping that into? Some have issues with those chips. My EVGA 760 A1 Rev 1.0 would not work with a Xeon because of the dual QPI link, hence the W3690

You don't have to get an expensive 6 core, you can get a 4 core LGA 1366 xeon CPU for as little as $10.

If you're looking for less power usage it's a great move, but you're going to miss that i7 performance.

great deal. This was the best course of action. Very inexpensive for a huge upgrade. 6 real cores, even with somewhat meh Westmere HT (compared to modern HT) that clock rather highly is nothing to scoff at.

I agree, I didn't even know my mb could take a xeon. Add the gtx 970 that's on the way and I think I'll be good for a couple more years.

Sweet. Let us know how it goes with the Xeon, and then also once you add the 970. Bet it's going to fly!
