I would love to make $128k/year as a software engineer at Google

FWIW: http://www.glassdoor.com/Salary/Google-Salaries-E9079.htm

Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, who I think made his fortune in satellite tv, said salaries for engineers have gone through the roof on west coast, but not yet elsewhere in country, but I believe he or someone else said there would probably be a shortage of engineers for next 10 years or so. He makes comments at end of this video clip: http://video.cnbc.com/gallery/?video=3000114536&play=1 (his comments start around 2 minute mark, though whole video clip is worth watching).

And salaries for IT professionals have gone up an average of 4.5% in last year: http://money.cnn.com/2012/10/11/pf/jobs/us-wages-oil-workers/index.html?source=yahoo_hosted

99.99999% of the jobs out there DO NOT and WILL NOT reflect Goggle work environment.

But hopefully things will change as companies look at google as a standard. Unfortunately we are talking about undoing 100s of years of "what workforce should be" damage here.

They also tend to hire very talented/skilled people. I'd probably take a paycut to work at a place where everyone is as smart or smarter than I am. To be honest I don't think I'm google material and I think quite highly of myself relative to my peers.

Using a cost of living calculator, that's the same as what I make now, assuming the position is in Silicon valley. Not that impressive, I actually consider myself slightly underpaid.

Aren't most googlers in their 20's? I heard those are the kind of jobs you bail on and look for something else by the time you are in your 30's

this.

A bunch of computer science majors who are graduating this year at my school (UCLA) have been getting offers from Microsoft and Google.

I overheard some guy yesterday saying he got an offer from Microsoft for $107k and was still waiting on Google.

This, every bit of it.

Friend of mine worked for Microsoft for many years and then got recruited by Google. He's much happier there. An n of 1, of course, but it does sound like a pretty awesome work environment.

I have an above average shot at getting a job at google here in Denmark, my dad used to play basketball with the ceo of google denmark.

did you bother to find out their working hours and the kind of commitment they work under?

from what I have heard about google, you work towards getting the job completed on time but have no restrictions on taking some personal time as long as you feel the project is on schedule. Employee facilities are state of the art with multiple "stress relieving" activities such as pool tables and "chill out zones". Food is top notch and free and they require the brains of 3 of your first 4 born children to be added to their "globally aware super world takeover computer".

Whats not to like....

wow, my uncle's grandfather's sister's next door neigbor used to play cricket with the CEO of Google Afghanistan's barber's maid's cousin's grocery bagger. think i have a chance?1. :\

Remember that Google typical hires the best people, just like Valve does. I imagine that if I am good enough to land a job at Google, I probably deserve a good paying job.

Which reminds me to finish my Internship app for Google...

Do they ask wild questions on it? On the google app I filled out years ago they asked things like how many inventions you have, how many coding competitions you've won, etc. Very intimidating. I doubt they were impressed by me claiming I invented a website and robot that logged when two people played a particular chess variant on a particular telnet site.

No, they didn't ask questions like that... lol

Im studying IT, not programming. But maybe I bypassed questions like that since I actually met Google reps at an IT Mixer and got an interview that way. I was only required to submit a formal application, but I didn't have any questions asked of me.

The interview has not happened yet, btw.

Try living in a nice part of San Jose. You need every bit of that 128k.

nice, crappy it doesn't matter, you'll be spending most of your time at work at Google anyway. on-site gyms, massage, laundry, gourmet food, its all designed to keep you working and not spend time at home.
