I want a good general knife. Not Swiss Army, not machete.
Any ideas ATOT?

BTW, it is for a gift 🙂

Thanks

get a good Sog, or Gerber multi-tool. you can spend $50 and get a good one or around $100 and get a very good one.

swiss army *is* a good general knife

i like kershaw knives, you can get nice pocket knives from them at a lot of places (wal mart even carries a few). good quality, not too pricey.

I know that Swiss Army is a good knife, but I don't want all the extras on it. Just the knife part.

Thanks guys, I am completely inexperienced when it comes to knife purchasing.

What is the purpose of the knife? Do you want to stab someone? Cut meat? Chop vegetables? Go camping?

We need more details.

I like swiss army knives, but prefer the leatherman for general use since every tool within the frame has a lockback. My only complaint is that the leatherman doesn't have a corkscrew. I'm a wino, so this is kinda a big deal.

But I second the Kershaw nomination. I've also had some pretty good luck with CRKT and Gerber for cheap knives. Since I happen to know ~ what you are wanting to spend, these are my picks. If you want to spend a bit more, I can do that too.

I've been meaning to get a real knife at some point. I've got my full size leather man and my leatherman micra for carrying in my pocket. The micra is a great little thing, small enough to always have it but still has really useful tools.

I just wish they made a decent version of the Micra with pliers. As small as that tool is, the pliers would still come in handy.

EDIT: wow I misspelled the same word 2x. fail.

True, I've missed the pliers a few times too. Still, it's by far the best mini-multitool I've found. I always have it with me.

I won't deny that it's a great little tool.

I'll second the Kershaw recommendation. I got a Kershaw Blackout for under $45 on eBay a while back, I love it!

QFT. I bought the blackout too, and I love it.

The Squirt P4 doesn't do it for you?

I bought the Micra though since I use the scissors more than the pliers...

It is for a gift for someone. I think they want a knife that will be able to do all things listed above and more. 🙂

I love the squirt. I use the pliers and wire cutters a lot actually. Comes in handy when changing guitar strings. 🙂

Well, you aren't going to be chopping veggies with a pocket knife. Not efficiently anyway.

I have a stainless steel Spyderco I bought probably 10+ years ago. Great little knife, very handy and very well made...although, I've never stabbed anyone, cut meat with it, chopped vegetables or taken it camping.😕
