I feel like I'm not "learning" anything from watching Star Wars.....it's all fantasy.

At least in Call of duty infinite warfare you get to explore the solar system, and there was effort to make it realistic.

I'm not that familiar with 'Star Trek' but I heard it's based in the Milky Way which I think is more "Tame" than Star Wars.

if you watch a media property about wizards with laser swords in the hopes that you will learn something I’m not sure what to tell you.

Maybe find some reruns of Cosmos instead?
Only if they're in Chinese though, to help him learn Chinese.

You should watch Star Trek. It's basically science fact, and the fiction is only to speed up the process to make things interesting for weekly viewers. You'll learn a lot about the galaxy. Between Next Generation, Deep Space 9, and Voyager, you'll have most of the galaxy covered.

Wasn't there a seen where luke and friends are looking fondly out a window at the milky way? Or at least I assumed it was the milky way. Was it a scene after Luke gets out of the Bacta tank?

Well, it takes place in a galaxy far, far away, so it could easily be another spiral galaxy.

A lot of spiral galaxies look pretty similar. Could be any of the billions out there.

Or y'know, they just used a picture of the Milky Way. Was it edge-on or vertical?

I believe the story takes place a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.......

OP, maybe if you reframed it from thinking of it as teaching you astronomy and such, and instead approached it from the perspective of learning about cinematography and special effects, you could consider it educational.

Star Wars is something that requires just letting the story "flow" and you take in the world.

Not everyone gets captured into the fandom, but there is a reason it makes fans out of people. The "totality" of the Star Wars universe has a sense of its own.

Yeah, the 'sense' is to make as much money as possible for a handful of people through nonsensical storytelling, ancient tropes, and rivers of toys.

The reams of fanfics, forum posts, and other content from fans indicate it is a serious impact on people's lives.

True, nostalgia can be crystallized into a real form, but that's not specific to star wars itself. Could easily be a less predatory story (and associated story tellers) that benefited from the work effort.

I don't think it's just mere nostalgia. The space age rush died in a decade or so but it still appealed to millennials, who probably were more into dinosaurs with the first season of Power Rangers and Jurassic Park.

It's broad enough and with enough mystique for people to generally related to the war story, the love story, etc without relating it to anything irl and the Jedi as a concept simply gets some people's brains brainstorming.
