I would like some advice on my future gaming rig.

I'm going to be putting my new rig together soon too. I really wish I could get around reinstalling XP as well.

format, go xp pro

i like 2k a lot, its much better then 98. and it seems to take up less space, use less memory, and perform better then xp. the only issue is sometimes it doesnt support games, and i found myself wasting space on a dual 2k/xp boot, so i ended up saying screw it and just putting xp pro on. theres probably a lot of bloat you can cut out of xp, if you are concerned about that sort of thing for performance reasons.

but definitely, absolutely do not stick with your current installation of 98. when you install a new mainboard in a 98 system, sometimes it works out ok, but many times the os will freak out and crash even if you've installed the drivers for it. so you may be looking at an os reinstall anyway. plus, remember lots of slowdowns are caused by software bloat. so reinstalling is always good..

I have been using Win2k for my only OS for about 2 years.

Never had a problem with games except maybe 1 or 2 OLD games that detect it as NT and then tell you to use Win98.

I am doing a major upgrade (everything but my Ti4600) and going to XP...

I found on firingsquad.com that the 5900SE outperformed the 9800np 5 out of 9 times and nvidia does better on OpenGL games such as JKJA and JKJO2, which I play a lot of.
So what's the general consensus, does the Asus mobo offer the best bang for the buck?

Get Shuttle, cheaper, and not a single problem, good options for overclocking aswell

I hate WinMe too, very buggy. Mine used to have this problem that when it shutdown, it would enter into the blue screen of death. So what I had to do is restart the computer before I shutdown. Sucks huh. Back then, I used to shutdown my computer all the time, once a day. Now, its always on.
