I won a computer from Ocean Spray and Dell

The first two times I was notified, I thought it was a scam or something so I ignored the certified letters.
A representative called me and after talking to her it sounded legit.
I also checked into it by doing a search for +Ocean Spray + Dell and I found the contest I must have entered online here.
Looking at the rules here it looks like my odds of winning were 1:50,518.

Will this be better for RC5 or SETI? 🙂
Dell? OptiPlex GX100 with Intel Celeron? processor featuring MMX technology at 433MHz with 66MHZ front side bus, 4.3 GB Microsoft® Windows® 98 2nd edition, 15? monitor, 40X max CD-Rom, 1 year next business day on-site service 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

it's your computer, so do whatever you want with it, if it's for TA then thats a plus, if it's for seti thats even better 😉

well,

1.) what project are you more involved in?
2.)how much ram?

I could give you reasons for each project but its still up to you,

RC5: right now we need everything we can get, to fend of the DPC and it would be greatly appercated.

SETI: Right now we are on course for a higher spot and would love to have as many WU as we can get our hands on.

note: I am not a member of seti I use the word "we" because I feel that we are not two seprate teams but two groups within the same team.

its up to you, but if I had it I would set it up for RC5, but thats because that is my main project.

Yeah, TA-OGR needs help so we don't keep coming in second to slashdot... very close race, and a few machines would make a big difference.

By the looks of things, I'm thinking this contest had a long entry time.😉 Congrats Curt, and don't forget to set it to RC5.😉

Just my thought,======== use it for what you want.😎

I say put it to use at whatever project it has the lowest opportunity cost for. Speaking of which, I think it is time to try and update the opportunity costs page....okay guys, how about this:

We get someone to collect data from all other members concerning many different machines, and then recompile it (no disrespect to Keng6 who came up with it, because it is a great idea, just a little outdated with all these new clients).

I suppose that, if no one else volunteers, I will....

email me here

Please only send me your data if it is doing soley the distributed project, meaning, please make sure that no other things are influencing it, such as findfast, virus checkers, scandisks, etc. Pure crunching power only 😉

Thanks.

At first I was worried this was a scam because they wanted my SS#.
I now know they need it for taxes. 🙁

I checked the OptiPlex GX100 out.
This is Dell's value line.
The cheapest one they have now comes with 64MB RAM.
I may actually get something better. 🙂
The rules say they can give me something better and Dell no longer even makes them this slow. 🙂

The person on the phone said after I get my certified letter(for the third time 😱 ), fill it out, get it notarized and send it back; they will send me a voutcher and I'll have to call a 1-800 number(Dell?)to have them do the rest.

She also said I can upgrade if I want. 😀
At the time of the contest the computer had a value of $987.
Maybe that is how much the voucher will be worth at Dell.

Yes, this will work for the team just like my other toys.
I will try to put it where it will do the most good.(like BurntKooshie says "lowest opportunity cost&quot😉

The neat thing is(to the best of my recollection)it was a link from these forums that got me to enter the contest. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Congrats Curt Oien!!! It is nice to know people actually win that stuff! 🙂😀🙂😀

Since you live in Minnesota and winter is getting close you want to run the project that will help the most with your heating bill. Well, SETI will do just that!! You might even remove the heatsink and toast marchmellows whilst seeking contact from other carbon life forms! Nah, better live the sink and fan alone.

Again Congrats!

I'm a SETI dude but still... If it's a celeron (66mhz bus) wouldn't it be better for rc5? I'm not positive on the performance impact of bus speed and RAM timings on rc5 but I know SETI likes a high bus speed and fast RAM timings. Either way, put it where you want and enjoy! 🙂 Congrats!!! 🙂

Orange Kid and Wellcky,

😀 Do you two sneak around the house and change the computers back and forth between SETI and RC5? 😉

Robor

The SETI gods are displeased with you! ,they will exact punishment to you 😉

SSP

Overclocked Celerons run SETI very nicely ,like my 366 @ 550 🙂.
Also the new v3.0 clients run much quicker with Celerons than the older v2.x clients did.

PhotoLenny,

I have two of my own toys and two AssLaminated toys cracking for RC5, under the TA_Seti@hotmail.com miniteam right now:

P233 MMX
PIII 450
Athlon 700
PIII 800 or 850 (It's that CRS problem that comes with old age after a misspent youth.)

I may put this new toy on the same thing.

What I would really like is to have some CPU's with 1MB of cache for SETI.
I'll just have to convince my wife that I really need four computers.
