Indeed. My BIL pulled the same stunt with his wife, his daughter, myself, and my wife in the car one evening. It wasn't a close call at all, but, it still pissed me off to no end. Argh.

we went shooting towards the tracks when we both noticed that the train had just triggered the barriers to start coming down.

Sane people generally STOP when the barriers are coming down... not speed up and shoot 'thru' them. In my case, posted above,the barriers were already down and my BIL drove around them, which was 10x worse than this but both are BAD.

How old is the car ? I wouldn't risk doing those things (ie. making left turns just head of oncoming cars, etc.) in vehicles that may die on you at any time... especially when you gas it harder than normal.
