The young woman on the bike decided to cross the intersection against the red light. The driver of the Ford Escape was proceeding across the intersection and ran over the bike.

The cyclist had no lights or reflective clothing on and the intersection is not well lit.

The cyclist went under the truck with the bike. It was rather nasty to watch. She stopped the truck half way across the intersection. The front tires were now flat.

The girl miraculously got up and was walking around. The police showed up in about 5 mins. They took the girl away in an ambulance just to make sure she was ok.

The driver, also a woman, was visibly upset. I gave my statements to the police and left to come home and tell ATOT all about it.

No sympathy for the cyclist.
I hope the truck driver got the cyclists information so that they could recoup any damages to their Ford Escape. No reason the driver or their insurance should cover the cost of the cyclists traffic violation.

i dont know if i would call bicycle vs SUV a "crash" ... more of a car-assisted suicide attempt.

<--I hope the cyclist is okay.

Couldn't possibly care less about the damage to the SUV.

About 3 weeks ago, I saw a bike do the same thing at a moderately busy intersection, in an are with bicycle lanes (good ones), riding on the wrong side of the road. Luckily, he almost got run over by a cop. The cop laid on the horn while braking hard and "pulled over" the bike immediately in a very pissed tone.

why should the SUV be responsible for the cyclist being a dumbass?

I represented a cyclist that was leveled by an SUV. He had a shattered leg, fractured skull and other bumps and bruises. He also got a bill for about $1K for the property damage to the auto.

What does that have to do with this story?

I hope the cyclist is ok, but I according to the story, she should still have to pay for any damages to the SUV.

I knew Jules would show up here hating on "the SUV"

I sincerely hope the cyclist is okay...what's the problem here?

You want me to worry about the damages to a pile of metal over the life of a person? Sorry, not gonna happen. Actually, I'm not sorry. There is zero need for me to apologize for what I've stated in this thread.

I nearly hit a cyclist a few weeks ago. Same thing, the cyclist ran a red light. I had I not slammed on my brakes, I would have run right into the guy. It seems like about 30% of bikers have no regard for red lights and stop signs.

As a pedestrian, I've been run into by cyclists twice while walking on a sidewalk. Its quite painful when a spinning rubber tire hits you in the leg and then the handles hit you in the back.

I hate cyclists.

Was the woman in the SUV speeding, phoning, texting, grooming, eating, or drinking?

If it was the cyclists fault then I am glad he got billed for it.

Maybe you should stage a rally where you burn bicycles and cycling clothes...it's a free country after all.

At least burn the grape smuggling shorts they wear so hopefully they use something that covers the area a bit better, well the men version only that is. ;)

sympathy found. for suv driver. can you imagine the emotional drama she has to go through?
I'd be traumatized if some cyclist moron put a dent on my H2. cyclists should be required to carry insurance too.
