I don't notice the drop in quality so much in the sauce or meat, mostly in the cheese and crust.

I worked at Pizza Hut in high school for a little while. That was over ten years ago.

At that time, they already had stuff like special measuring cups you were supposed to use to make sure you didn't put a gram too much cheese on a pizza. If you went by their corporate standards, the shit was pathetic. Typical penny-pinching to make up for gross mismanagement.

When you get a good pizza, it's basically the guy saying 'fuck you, Pizza Hut; better to make it good one time than to give them a free one because we sent them a garbage pizza.' They get reprimanded for it.

ask her if a person who orders 6 toppings (ie: all the meats) gets less portion per topping than someone ordering 2 toppings (ie: pepperoni and sausage).

so in effect, the total weight of 6 toppings is the same as 2 toppings?
yet they charge you more for the 6 toppings pizza than the 2 topping?

you do get less, and the reason for that is the conveyor belt cooking. the pizza is only in that oven for a set amount of time, and it has to get cooked in that set amount of time. which means less of each topping when you order more toppings.

It's all about keeping that pizza on or about the target $10 price range. They don't want to exceed this price point so they cut the ingredients.

Costs of ingredients have gone up, with the cost of cheese going up substantially, all while the price of pizza has gone down or stayed the same. That results in lesser quality and quantity of ingredients. Once upon a time Little Ceasers was actually edible. Now it is far from it.

To add to that there are several chains that charge the same for 1 topping as 6 toppings.

Just ate Pizza Hut the other day.

Got a large Meat Lover's and it was piled on with toppings and cheese...so much so that it was actually difficult to eat without making a big mess due to the size of the slices and the amount of toppings.

Of course, when I ordered it I went with pan crust and added extra cheese (which tasted awesome btw) and double pepperoni and sausage...and of course it also had the normal layer of ham and bacon.

I was thoroughly and happily satisfied...maybe you just went to a shitty Pizza Hut franchise.

Woah woah woah, wait. You mean the pizza you ordered was a meat lovers, and then you did double pepperoni and sausage, and extra cheese, and it was piled with toppings?

Color me shocked.

that's normal though, some stuff is pricier.

Pizza Hut was great back in the late 80's - early 90's. The prices here haven't changed much, but the quality sure has.

Not only did you get lots of toppings, but you got plenty of cheese. You can't even get the 3 cheese blend here anymore. That was my favourite.

:(

It varies per franchise. I really don't understand people that argue about this stuff. Some franchises have tight ass managers who skimp on the toppings and others are more generous. The same probably goes for the freshness.

Some of you must be eating at poorly run restaurants. Pizza Hut hasn't changed a bit to me. We had some last week and it was just as I remembered it being as a kid.

Asked :)

She said they go by a picture---it's supposed to be the same amount of toppings, but it can vary by management since the franchises are privately owned.

Pizza Hut has changed, and anyone thinking it was nostalgia don't know what they are talking about. They used to make their pizza from scratch, now it's frozen disks. The quality has gone way down. Prices have gone up. And it is only Pizza Hut. Dominos has gotten better, Little Caesars is making a comeback(as the super cheap but fast pizza place), Pizza Pipeline is better, etc.

And Abby's... is still amazing. Always has been, always will be.

It's not the same Pizza Hut as 15 years ago... God dammit.
Nope, and it's clear you last ate there 15 years ago. They've been this way for awhile. Little Caesar's is better, but they've done the same thing as of late, getting more sparse on toppings (they were much better maybe 5 years ago, but today only slightly, and much of that could just be that I prefer their crust). Dominos is better than PH, but even their new comeback recipes are too salty and greasy for me. Papa Johns is so-so, with too much sugar (or is it HFCS?) and low-quality cheese...they were far better when they were expanding.

This is why even mediocre local pizza joints can survive. I can be a pizza snob, but sometimes, I just want chewy fast food, and it's not even worth it as that, anymore, with the chains.

Meanwhile, the average local pizza places are as good as they ever were, with the one exception of the closest to me :(. But, except for that one, their prices have also gone up a bit, over the years. I was out of my way just a week or two ago, for some work, and had one such place's stromboli. I used to occasionally stop in and get a small pizza or stromboli and drink for like $10 on the way home from work, 5-7 years ago, and now it was about $13.50. But it was just like I remembered it--not amazing, but better than I could make it myself, with no soy cheese or nasty soy oil in the dough, a thick crust, but still crispy outside (but only lightly tossed, so not as chewy as I'd like it to be, which always annoyed me with their pizzas), not skimpy with the fillings (toppings), and not too much sauce.

Little Caesars started the $5 pizza almost a decade ago. Little Caesars had really good pizza before they went to $5. And the $5 pizza was actually pretty decent when it first started. Today its no where near as good as when it first started and inedible compared to what Little Caesars was before they started the $5 pizza.

Ehh, I don't recall Little Caesars ever being impressive, but the hot n ready thing they have going now is pretty awesome.

It was actually pretty good in the '90s. Today it is by far the worst tasting chain pizza IMHO, but its $5 so its a better deal than most chain pizza places and a steal if you are trying to feed a group of kids.

Dominos was also pretty good in the '90s, but once costs started going up they made cut backs to the ingrediant quality, it got so bad they had to reformulate most of their products and advertise the fact they were crap but are now better(but still not as good as the 90s).

Its simple math though. Cost of ingredients have gone up significantly while the prices for pizza have stayed the same or are cheaper in some cases.

I still like Pizza Hut. We had the poutine pizza a few weeks back and it was delicious.

I can't believe no one's commented on this yet? Poutine? Hell yes. On pizza? Hell no. Yet I'm morbidly curious about this. I assume this is a Canada-only thing, unfortunately.

As for Pizza Hut, there is no doubt in my mind they've gotten worse over the years. This shouldn't come as any big shock considering the pizzas today are the same price or cheaper than their counterparts in the 80's and 90's...something's got to give to make the costs work.

They use some voodoo on the pizza right now. It only tastes good for about 20 minutes, and don't bother reheating it. I used to eat it all the time at work because there was one real close, cheaper than McDonalds and I get a whole pizza???? Man... those were the days.
