I live 10 mins away, and their warehouse is in between work and home, yet, every time I order something, I have to shell out for shipping. Freaking ridiculous. I just hope that one day, they'll have a little set up where local customers can pick up the products, save them on resources also. Man, I can only hope that they have good management to realize the potential.

That would be pretty cool. Even if they charged a nominal amount for will-call (like $5) it would be worth it for many people.
 
Newegg might also be making some of their profits off shipping. No shipping, they'd have to jack the price up a bit to compensate.
 
Well, then they'd be forced to start absorbing the extra costs of being a B&M outlet. I have a feeling that since they would only gain a handful of customers from the local areas in exchange for all the extra man power required to run even one register and upkeep a professional front end that it would be counter productive. Newegg has a really good hold on the internet PC parts market because of their price/customer service...adding additional costs would only end up costing the consumer more and hurting sales in their core market.

In conclusion, it may be a good deal for you but I don't think it would be a good idea for newegg.

Yeah... but it takes 1 guy to process the order, 1 guy to pack, 1 guy to ship, and shipping cost (+ material). I'm willing to pay their profits for shipping (which is around 2~3 bucks)
 
They don't even need a store front, we can just order online, comment that we will pick up. They never have to process the order except for charging us, and getting the products set aside. We come by, pick it up, go home, plug it in, and commence fragging.

Half their stuff is shipped free, so the cost is already built into the products.

That still could open them up to some liabilities and extra insurance costs. Any time you have non employees coming onto your property its going to change things. If I were newegg, I wouldn't do it. On the surface it sounds cut and dry, but I think there's more to it.

I've ran ecommerce for a company before, and many a time, customer ask if they can come by and pick products up, they were more than welcome. They come, present their receipt, they sit in lobby (just like guests to any company, no insurance involve), we fetch product, stamp receipt, adios. I'm very familiar with the way that these companies operate out of City of Industry, heck, I used to deal with most of them. Trust me, procedure sometimes is just what they would like you to think they have in place.

Neweggs in California, the world capital of bullsh|t lawsuits. I'd be concerned some customer would come, slip on some packing peanuts and sue us into oblivion.
 
yeah it's too bad newegg dosn't do this. I live 30mins from the warehouse and it usually takes 3-4 days to ship a pkg. Yeah shipping is free, but I get charged for taxes in NJ, BLAH!!
 
i use to talk to a guy on irc that said his dad was one of the top people or founders at newegg. he had no reason to lie to me and i had known him from irc for ~2 years, so i'll assume he's telling the truth. but he asked his dad and said there were no plans to offer willcalls. 🙁
 
oh yeah, and i hate fedex, it totally sucks in socal. atleast for me, several times they have claimed to attempt delievers without leaving any notices/slips and eventually they force me to drive out to their LA wherehouse to get it. so i pay newegg for shipping, which is like 20 minutes away, to ship via fedex, then i'm eventually forced to drive 30 minutes to pick it up a week late. yay. they've cost me several hundred dollars in business like that. 🙁
 
It's all about marketing and ratio. They are geared up and based on an online business model that includes shipping. They are not a B&M for a reason.
