I went to the hospital tonight...

For those of you that were slamming me here, I had to give in and visit the ER tonight.

I'm typing this one-handed, so I'll be breif: I found out that our benefits coordinator was full of it, and that there was "not a chance in hell" that my thumb injury would be covered. I was going to just forget about it, but then it swelled up real bad tonight, lost all feeling, and started hurting like hell.

No broken bones, but I seriously tore a ligament. I'm likely looking at surgery next month (which will be covered; i have it in writing). The doctor told me that had I just ignored the problem, i likely would have lost the use of my thumb. For those of you who said to get it looked at, you were right; enjoy it while it lasts.

I get to wear a nice splint for at least a month, probably longer since I'm likely going to need surgery. Don't expect to hear much from me for awhile; one handed-typing sucks, and I'm not a big porno fan, so I haven't had much practice. Damn, the irony of this all pisses me off to no end. I've been so careful for about 7 years, and then I go and hurt myself 5 days before my insurance starts. :|

:( I hope all goes well. Take care of yourself. If they have you go to physical therapy, be sure to do all of the exercises. They may seem like a pain the the butt (well, in your case a pain in the hand. ;) ) but make sure you do them. You will be thankful you did. Keep us posted, okay? :)

Sorry to hear that we were right about the seriousness of your injury (Sorry, had to throw that in there ;)).
Glad to hear that they will cover the surgery, that'll save you a big chunk of money.I hope everything goes well, and that you'll be back in two-handed full force soon.

Glad you're going to be okay, but next time, drop the beer before you fall. ;) Re-reading the other thread, it doesn't look like you were getting slammed but a whole bunch of people were trying to help out and impress on you how much more important YOU were than any medical bill.

Consider this one: I found out I was pregnant two weeks before my husband's insurance kicked in. I had nothing but complications, and when I was done, I had nearly $200,000 in hospital and other medical bills. Fortunately, the company my husband worked for really went to bat for us with the insurance company (they even did a little creative bookkeeping so it looked like they had hired him a month earlier), and eventually they paid all of it but our deductible. BUT, I would gladly pay $200,000 for my healthy son.

Balanced against the possible loss of the use of your hand, whatever the bill is, it's manageable and in five years you'll be grateful you had the chance to take care of it (and the friends to rag on you to get your ass to the doctor).

Yeah, I get the sense that your pissed at us for tellin ya to go get it looked at. Most of us wanted to see ya do the right thing, and I don't think anyone should say "told ya so!"

Take some advice from a physical therapist, when its time, go to a PT clinic that has a hand specialist. Good luck to ya :)

I missed your thread the first time around, reitz. I hope the very best for you and a speedy recovery.

It really doesn't look like the forum members were slamming you - only trying to get you to take immediate care of a serious problem.

Let us know how it turns out.

EDIT: One-handed typing isn't so bad . . . we'll forgive your typing errors.
:)

I am glad you got it looked at. I am not always an eloquent speaker so reread ChrichtonsGirl's reply and you have my feelings on this.

reitz Glad to hear you went and that there will be no permanent damage. Sorry I got so pissy with you and I hate to hear you're looking at surgery. I just didn't want to see you suffer any permanent damage so you'll get no gloating here, just glad to see you'll be ok and postting again in time. Believe me, it was just the voice of experience talking, been there, done that, had the cast to prove it. ;)

Things for you to do while you're a bit laid up.

You can alway just lurk here, a mouse only needs one hand and you can switch it to left handed use if you need. (you can alway just PFFFFFT, at threads that are BS!);)

Catch up on your reading.

Go to a museum.

Take some long walks and enjoy the fall weather.

Go to a local High School sporting event.

Or best of all, catch up on visiting some friends you haven't seen in a long while, they would be thrilled, I guarantee it.

Take care and stop back to once in a while to let us know how you're doing.

Best of luck with surgery.

No, not at all. I'm pissed at the timing of the whole situation, but that's to be expected.

reitz, I hate to be an I-told-you-so but your accident happened Thursday night. You posted on Friday in time to go to a Doctor's office for relatively cheap (compared to Hospital) treatment. Yet you choose to wait till Saturday when you choices became limited.

It's ok, I have done this too. It's just a lesson for next time (don't wait).

apoppin, forgive me for sounding like an idiot, but is it really cheaper to go into a doctor's office instead of the ER? There are well over a hundred diferrent physicians within walking distance of my apartment (living by three major hospitals does have its advatages), how do I decide which one to go to? Can I just show up, or do they require appointments?

I'll be honest, I really don't know anything about this kind of thing. I'm a relatively healthy person, and I've only seen doctors 5 times in the past seven years (one trip to the ER for an asthma attack, two from accidents at work at a previous job, and two visits to the university health center for cough medicine and tylenol for colds). I've never been in a position to decide what type of treatment to seek, so I didn't realize I had a choice here.
