So I spend about $100 on ammo, safety gear, and gun range rentals....

i went w/my friend who has a 357 magnum, S&W, and beretta....

first time i learned about gun safety and shot a gun.

didn't do too bad....i have bad aim, but it was my first time w/a real gun!!

It was crazy!! It was fun!! it was freaking expensive!!!

I'm going to take some gun safety classes so I can learn more about this and get better...

any good tips for me?

Thanks all!

Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot what you are going to shoot. All other times keep your trigger finger indexed on the side and the weapon should be safe.

When shooting, concentrate on the front sight (the rear sights and target should be a slight blur), relax and control you breathing, and steadily pull back on the trigger. The key is to fire only with your trigger finger and keep your hand/wrist out of it as much as possible. You will fire more accurately when your finger is almost independent of your hand and the shot comes at a surprise. It's all about muscle control.

It takes a great deal of practice to improve your skills as a marksman.

Also, try to head to a rifle range if you have the chance, that's where the fun is.

I wanna go to one too, just for the experience. I wanna empty a semi into one of those pictures and come home and post it on my wall. Too bad nobody will rent to a 20 year old though.

I'm currently researching the same thing but with a rifle. Its great that you had fun, I hope I'll have a great time too.

buy your ammo here
much cheaper than at a store or at the range.
there are a few other places too.
it doesnt need to be that expensive

If you are using a rental gun, most ranges require you to use there own ammo.... Prevents someone from coming in with potentially damaging hot handloads...

good point. i have actually never rented at the range before but that makes sense.
sounds like he could buy his own gun for the cost of a few trips and rentals.
rental is a good way to learn which gun you like and get some experience though.

How could you have possibly spent $100 at the range? Ammo is pricey, but not THAT expensive? How many rounds were you shooting?

Make sure you always blow out the barrel after everyshot.....

The range I have gone to sells reman ammo to the tourists that come in there and rent, its actually kinda expensive and is not worth a damn to shoot.

safety tip:

treat any and all guns as loaded, even if you know they are empty. how many "unloaded" guns have you read about that have killed people.

you can easily spend $100 on ammo if you are buying decent stuff, plus .357 is not cheap

Good stuff. I've never been to a range, but I've fired multiple shotguns, a few .22's, a 357 magnum, and a .54 blackpowder barrel loading rifle...now that's some kick.

How much did everything cost you? gun rental, ammo, training, Range Fees, etc.

There's an outdoor one by my house that's always pretty busy (had soem huge competition a couple weeks ago) but I've never been there. Of course I don't think my BB gun has the power to hit the end of the range they use. heh.

When shooting rifles i find the best way is to take aim, control breathing, breathe deeply in...gun goes up, out gun goes down, in gun goes up, out gun goes down, in gun goes up then breathe out slowly until you have the target dead in your sights stop breathing out, fire, wait, then breathe out the rest of teh way

here are the approximate costs:

$80 on ammo (9mm and 357 ammo. we shot over 600 rounds each.)
$12 for all day firing range lane rental
$6 for some good earplugs
a few dollars for targets.

I used my friend's guns - we didn't rent them.

my friend taught me all the gun safety, so no charge for that. however, we were talking to the guys who ran teh firing range, and they are really cool and knowledgable. both of us want to take their course.

I have a newfound respect for guns now...and yes, i treat every gun like its loaded even if i know 100% taht it's not.

Go to a local gunshow and buy ammo. You can get 1000 rounds of brass 9mm (not the steel Soviet crap) for like $50....

EDIT: 600 rounds each?!?!?! WTF! How could you shoot 600 rounds a piece through a 6 shot .357 and a max 15 shot 9mm? YOu must've been there all day!

Never use the scope of your gun to look at someone with it still on your gun. That's something my friend told me a while ago.

I used to enjoy marksmanship myself. That is good advice. Breathing control is essential. And also, believe it or not, heart rate can also be a signifigant factor in precision shooting, especially if youre using a lighter rifle. As time goes on, you'll pick up a lot of other little tips and things to look for to help you out, especially if you have someone to teach you the correct way to shoot. It takes a lot of practice to sharpen your skills, so keep at it. Marksmanship is fun, just remember to observe good safety procedures, else you'll regret it eventually.
