With all the chicks with kids that I see on online dating sites, I would have imagined that Alabama would be even worse. :p

I saw the Big Lebowski with my family when it was in theaters... I was 13 at the time.

Glad I opted out of taking my mom to watch Titanic. Think our priest was there too when she went with a group <_<

Because if sex wasn't treated like such voodoo and instead talked about more then maybe we would have a lot less pregnancy and spread of STD's.

right, because tv and movie sex is all about how important it is to be careful and the consequences of not being careful

if only all tv was people going at 24/7, there would be no STDs or unwanted pregnancies.

The level of stupidity for people who actually think the less you talk about sex with teenagers the less sex they will have is about as low as you can go.

it's not 'talking about' they are concerned about, it's creating a culture where it's not just ok, it's encouraged. In fact, if you're not boinking someone right now, you're a loser. It's helping to create an environment where even those who aren't ready feel pressured to engage simply because it's expected.

how is that backwards?

it's very logical

how many teens turn into murderers? very very few. it's basically not a concern for most parents. no matter how much violence they watch, they aren't going to become violent people

how many teens are going to get pregnant, get someone else pregnant and/or get STDs? Substantially more.

Thus parents are naturally concerned about the greater risk.

Tell that to the people saying music, video games and movies are the reason for kids going on killing sprees....seriously, America DOES have it wrong.

FTFY.

sex in the media is not going to get teens pregnant, they've been doing that for thousands of years on their own (well, with a partner of course). Not teaching children how to have safe sex is what's going to get them pregnant, they're going to fuck like rabbits no matter what your dumb ass says.

Actually, I don't think it has anything to do with America, or American culture, or anybody's culture. I bet that if you could take a sampling of fathers from around the world, put them in a room with their teenaged daughter and a big screen, and give them a remote with two buttons labeled "Graphic Violence" and "Steamy Sex," the percentage of fathers that are going to push the "Graphic Violence" button is way over 50.

Of course it's because of our culture. Remember, the Puritans were the first truly successful long term settlers. And Puritanical beliefs still corrupt our culture today, as in our shame/embarrassment of all things sex related.

I doubt that means anything. The Puritans were quickly overwhelmed by waves of Scotch, Dutch, German, Irish, and Asian immigration. And you didn't address my hypothetical assertion. May I assume you think a majority of fathers from countries other than America would prefer to view sex, rather than violence, in the presence of their daughters?

I think this is an accurate assessment.

Extreme sex repression and demonization in the ME has clearly made them the most ethical and successful cultures on this planet. We should learn from 'em!

How can it corrupt our culture when it is the basis for it? :hmm:

So the media has an impact on teen smoking and teen eating habits. Media helps change teen attitudes about race and gender. Media influences teen shopping habits. Media impacts every aspect of teen lives. Except sex. Got it.

Saying 'teens will do it anyways' is an naive statement. SOME teens will do it anyways, SOME teens won't do it no matter what, but there's a decent amount in the middle that can be influenced one way or another.

To say media culture can't influence teen attitudes towards sex while it can influence everything else in their lives simply isn't credible.

then why is it that we have a MUCH lower teen pregnancy rate here in Denmark where I can assure we are much more liberated when it comes to sex in the media. You have 10 times the teen pregnancy rate of the Netherlands and the dutch are many things but prudes they're not.

I would push the sex button.

There is just too much violence in this world already. If I had a daughter, I'd prefer she felt comfortable discussing sex with me anyway.

Pansies. My parents took me to see the god father and the exorcist when they were in the theater. I was like 7 or so.

You're a braver man than I. By the way, it's not talking about it with her that I find terrifying. We've talked, very frankly. When you have three daughters you have to get the point across clear as a bell, or the odds of disaster are unacceptably high :).

But watching people doing it on screen while she is present... eh, don't think I can manage it.

Yea, I understand the OP. Sex is very taboo in our culture, therefore, because of the taboo, it would be very awkward to watch a movie in which sex happens with one's child or one's parent.

the only thing that really concerns me about this country is how embarrassingly myopic we are about sexuality.

it's disgusting, really.

... and after two hours and forty-five minutes of graphic, digitally enhanced violence punctuated by gouts of hydraulically propelled gore, I realized that I was just happy there wasn't any sex.

very good movie, great message. I watched with my wife and then rented for our kids. can't get enough of slaver pricks getting butchered! sequel!
