I was wondering how many anandtechers are prior or active military.

Almost twenty years served now. Done Bosnia, Rwanda, Haiti, The Gulf, Somalia (the worst). Is that enough? I'm due to retire in five months. Dont want to go to war anymore.

Wow, i am really suprised at the diversity of military personnel on here. We have the soon to retire veterans to the lowly booter (me). Makes me feel like i belong to something a little more important.

Oh by the way, to become a SEAL you could enlist in the NAVY. They offer the pretest that if you qualify you can re-classify and go swicc(sp?), EOD, or SEAL. Was another one too i think. I am sure that there are other ways but that was what 4 guys in my division did in BOOT.

don't remember exactly and it is different for each rating you want. i know swicc gets tp run in tennis shoes but SEALs have to run in boots and they have a shorter time limit as well.

i know the test concests of push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, a mile (maybe mile and half) swim, a 1.5 mile run and something else i can't remember.

btw- EOD is explosive ordinance disposal, swicc is special warfare craft crewman, and you know what a seal is.

you can take the test in boot or enlist with a rating(job) that is transferrable to a SEAL rating and take the test while in school.

I did 4 years in the Navy and was an AX (Aviation Antisubmarine Warfare Technician). The rate no longer exists but we were avionics techs that supposedly specialized in ASW equipment. The reality was that we did the identical job as an AT (Aviation Electronics Technician) but were restricted to ASW billets. I worked briefly on Stoofs (S-2F,G) and then the S3-A once our squadron (VS-31) got ours and we were trained. I spent a year on the USS Independence CV-62 and did a Med cruise on her and spent a few months on the USS Eisenhower before my discharge. Way too much information but what the heck. ;)

<< I voted yes - marine corps, but I haven't shipped out to boot yet. >>

Good luck. I hear that sand fleas require 6 foot deep burial so don't kill any.:D And also remember no jelly donuts allowed in the barracks.

The military never seemed like what I wanted to do. I appreciate all of you serving our country. My father was in the Army during Vietnam, he was a supply clerk in Tacoma,WA. I believe he was either E-3 or E-4. I would have to ask my mother. He died 10 years ago, but the military never forgets if you serve them. We got the folded flag and the footstone for his grave listing his service. Now that I am older I really appreciate what the military did for my father. He ended up putting his supply clerk service into real life. He went from cleaning toilets at age 16 at a southeast grocery chain to the vice-president of store operation at age 40. I think the army had something to do with his organization and skill with people. I only wish I was as half as organized as he was.

My mother still keeps track of old friends that were stationed in Tacoma with them. One of them I have gotten to know quite well. A nice cajun man from Louisiana who comes to visit twice a year with his wife and family.

Nope, I'm too wimpy for something like that. I also can't stand people bossing me around so I guarantee I would be the drill sergeant's favorite person.
